CHENNAI, NOV 24

Thousand Lights MLA Dr Ezhilan on Wednesday exhorted the students to take part in extra-curricular activities as it would help them to grow as good human being. He was speaking at the Kalai Thiruvizha organized at the Government Hobart Muslim Girls Higher Secondary School at Royapettah here on Wednesday.

  • ‘Kalai Thiruvizha’ is being conducted by state government to bring out inherent talents of students beyond curriculum
  • The top 20 students at the State-level will be taken on an educational tour abroad, the department said in a release.
  • School-level contests will be held from November 23 to 28, regional-level from November 29 to December 5, district-level from December 6 to 10 and State-level from January 3 to 9.

Dr Ezhilan said, “Various programmes conducted during the Kalai Thiruvizha will improve various skills of the students. This will help them to reach greater heights in their life. All students ought to actively participate in extra-curricular activities apart from text-book learning, as it would help them to grow as good human being.”

Large number of students from Class 6 to XII took part in various events enthusiastically and show-cased their talents.

The School Education Department, under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), is conducting ‘Kalai Thiruvizha’ from November 23 to January 9 in Government/Government-aided schools across the state in four stages – block level, revenue distrct level and state level.

These kinds of Thiruvizhas are usually conducted by the education department at one place, where the children would be brought from various destinations in the past. With a view to change these kind of practice, the education department helmed by the School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi has directed to conduct the programme at school-, block level, district level and state level.

Students winning at the school-level competitions can advance to the regional-level, then the district-level and eventually State-level finals that are to be held in January next year. The top 20 students at the State-level will be taken on an educational tour abroad, the department said in a release.

The competitions under many categories like vocal and instumental music, classical and folk dance, art etc., at the school-level, will be held from November 23 to 28, regional-level from November 29 to December 5, district-level from December 6 to 10 and State-level from January 3 to 9.
