AHMEDABAD, MAR 4
More than 150 hernia surgeons from across the country are gathering for 2 days to deliberate in detail about various surgical procedures for hernias at the ASA HerniaCon 2023 in Ahmedabad. The conference is jointly organized by Ahmedabad Surgeons Association and Nidhi Hospital, said the organizers here on Saturday.
Dr Sunil D Popat, Medical Director, Nidhi Hospital and Organising Chairman of ASA HeniaCon, said, “Hernia is a common condition that needs timely medical attention. These are some of the signs and symptoms of hernia that one should not ignore. Hernia occurs when there is a defect in the abdominal wall fascia and muscles, through which the body’s internal contents such as the small and large intestines, stomach, bladder, or other organs protrude out. It is seen in both men and women. But there is still a lack of awareness regarding this and many cases of hernia go unreported. There are many types of hernias such as inguinal (groin) hernia, femoral hernia, umbilical hernia, hiatal hernia, epigastric and ventral hernias.”
Dr Popat added that “Hernias can occur in men or women and sometimes in children. Hernia has no medical treatment. Hernia has to be surgically repaired. For the last 3 decades hernia surgeries are done laparoscopically. During this conference, attending surgeons will be exposed to the latest surgical procedures available for various hernias. More than 20 National and several International Faculties are participating in the conference.”

- Laparoscopic Hernia Repairs give excellent results with less pain and better cosmesis: Dr Chirag Desai, President of Ahmedabad Surgeons Association
There will be a live telecast of advanced hernia surgery from Nidhi Hospital for the benefit of all attendees on Sunday, Dr Popat said.
Dr Chirag Desai, President of Ahmedabad Surgeons Association said, “Laparoscopic Hernia Repairs give excellent results with less pain and better cosmesis. Ahmedabad has grown very well in the field of Laparoscopic Surgery over the last 3 decades. This conference will provide the opportunity for surgeons in this field to master the art of laparoscopic hernia surgeries and eventually benefit the patients at large.”
Answering a query on the cost of hernia surgeries, Dr Desai replied that “Minimum invasive surgeries cost vary according to the type of hernia. Generally, it is in the range of Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 lakh as advanced gadgets like robotic are deployed to perform MIS. This is covered under insurance schemes as well as many central and state health schemes. To prevent hernias, one has to consult their family physician regularly. Risk factors leading to hernia are age, pregnancy, abdominal damage due to injury, family history, constipation, lifting heavy weights, recurrent cough, and even sudden weight gain.”
An untreated hernia can cause intestinal blockage, incarceration, or strangulation, making it difficult for one to do his real-world activities with ease. Moreover, one will have to pay attention to any changes occurring in the body and report to the doctor.
