AHMEDABAD, APR 17

Marengo CIMS Hospital organized an interactive get-together to celebrate the success of kidney and liver transplant surgeries at the healthcare facility. The team of Nephrology and Kidney Transplants participated in the event hosted at R K Royal Hall at Sola, Ahmedabad on Monday. The event was marked by the comprehensive lectures delivered by a team of doctors comprising Dr Siddharth Mavani, Dr. Pankaj Shah, Dr. Mayur Patil, & Dr. Rechal Shah, Dr. Vikas Patel, and other members. Dr Mavani and his team reiterated the importance of the criticality of the symptoms indicating kidney failure and the importance of the urgent medical intervention required to address these symptoms. The event was followed by a gala get-together lunch.

Commenting on this, Dr Siddharth Mavani, Director Nephrology, Marengo CIMS Hospital says, “Kidney diseases  are rising very fast, and awareness is low in proportion.  One of the major diseases that can be fatalistic if not addressed on time, kidney disease research and studies reveal that India and China lead globally in CKD. Kidney disease is one of the most prevalent chronic conditions and is a frequent complication of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity. The first technical machine for dialysis was unsuccessful and often led to deaths. Treatment options for end-stage kidney failure include dialysis, kidney transplantation, or comprehensive conservative care. Dialysis can be performed at home, which is less disruptive to lifestyle and may have health benefits.”

Dr Keyur Parikh, Chairman, Marengo CIMS Hospital says, “Marengo CIMS Hospital has been doing applaudable work in saving lives through organ transplants. the teams of doctors spearheading these surgical procedures are not only passionate about their work but passionate about bringing their patients back to the best of health. Marengo CIMS Hospital doctors will continue on this path of unshakeable focus to deliver and set higher benchmarks.”

To make the event even more memorable, more than 100 kidney and liver transplant patients showed up in solidarity to showcase the success of the surgeries conducted on them to save their lives. These patients included both live and cadaver donations in which they received the organ required to save their lives. The event was further marked with fun-filled activities where the patients were also made to play several games. The day was also filled with feet-tapping music which added to the fun component even further.

According to a recent study, almost 10 – 12% of the Indian population suffers from some or other form of kidney disease. The leading cause is often attributed to diabetes. A survey conducted a few years ago revealed that almost 77 million population in India suffers from Diabetes, 38 million showed some sign of kidney dysfunction. Currently, we witness success in complex cases with procedures like transplant with blood group mismatch (ABO Incompatibles), and combined liver-kidney transplants. The future even envisages a combined pancreas liver and kidney transplant. The newer molecule in clinical trials defines prevention in deterioration of the kidneys once diagnosed with failure. Artificial wearable kidneys, Xeno transplant which is extracting a kidney from animals, and transplantation in humans also form components of a brighter future in kidney care.

The past decade has tracked the fast emergence of newer technologies that can lead to major breakthroughs. These technologies are poised to become increasingly available and accessible to the patient data and result in generating higher incidences of lower costs, making treatment increasingly affordable. The advancements in biological sciences, supported by EMR and technological advancements in imaging modalities have catalyzed the treatments in kidney care to immense proportions, bringing down deaths.
