Chief Minister hands over 2,271 new vehicles to police department

The vehicles include 510 jeeps, 20 buses, 100 mini buses, 50 vans, 50 lorries, four water tankers and 1,506 bikes, together costing Rs. 91.78 crore and 31 vehicles for police officers in the rank of superintendents of police (SP) at a cost of Rs. 3.79 crore. Officers said even with the additions, many of them are without an official vehicle.

The state government has bought 2,271 vehicles at a cost of Rs. 95.85 crore for the police department. As part of the handing over to the department, the Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami flagged off the vehicles at the secretariat on Friday.

The vehicles include 510 jeeps, 20 buses, 100 mini buses, 50 vans, 50 lorries, four water tankers and 1,506 bikes, together costing Rs. 91.78 crore and 31 vehicles for police officers in the rank of superintendents of police (SP) at a cost of Rs. 3.79 crore. Officers said even with the additions, many of them are without an official vehicle.

Meanwhile, the state police have recommending winding up of the Tamil Nadu Police Transport Corporation (TNPTC) headed by an additional director-general of police (ADGP). Former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had created this unit to handle all the vehicles of the police department earlier.
