AHMEDABAD, MAY 2
Asserting that myths and fears surrounding organ donations must be dispelled, Gujarat Additional Chief Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Manoj Aggarwal said the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) and the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO) have been relentlessly working on various platforms, in coordination with the media and NGOs to create awareness on organ donation and organ transplantation.
He was speaking at a ‘felicitation’ programme for organised on Monday by the Akhil Bhartiya Vikas Parishad (ABVP), an NGO working to spread awareness on deceased organ and tissue donation activities of the Civil Hospital Medicity, Ahmedabad.
The Additional Chief Secretary (health) felicitated 34 healthcare pros of Civil Hospital Medicity, including two from New Civil Hospital-Surat, for achieving 104 organ donations in two years.
Manoj Aggarwal said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel and Health Minister Rushikeshbhai Patel are helping a lot to promote the organ donations. Government hospitals in the state have taken special efforts to increase the cadaver organ transplant and organ donations. The highly expensive transplant surgery is now covered under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya-Ayushman Yojana and made completely free, and efforts are made to minimise transplant cost for the patient. In recognition of public sector hospitals taking a lead in Gujarat in organ transplantation, the Prime Minister has recently awarded the SOTTO for it innovative steps in organ donation sector. The Akhil Bhartiya Vikas Parishad trustees have done a commendable work by bestowing trophies with merit certificates on all healthcare staffers to boost their morale”.
SOTTO convener Dr Pranjal Modi said, “In October 2015 ‘Mann ki Baat’ while speaking on organ donation, our visionary Prime Minister Narendra Modi had quoted a Sanskrit slogan ‘Tain Tyakten Bhunjhita’ (“What is given by Him, allotted to you, you enjoy that”). The joy of sacrifice is beautifully described in this mantra ‘Tain Tyakten Bhunjhita’.”
“Efforts of SOTTO, operating since 2019, have succeeded in saving lives by transplanting 1,078 organs received by 354 organ donors to the needy in the last four years. During the pandemic-induced lockdown, a private hospital in Rajkot was allowed to perform an organ transplantation on a child. Since he was Kidney Hospital patient, the entire cost of the surgery was borne by the state government. Comparing to southern satates, in Gujarat, the amount of organ donation is very low against the need of patients suffering from kidney, liver and heart disease every day, if there is awareness at national, state and region level, we can further the life expectancy of many people. The manner in which the state government is providing support for organ donation is very appreciable and it is also contributing financially to people’s ailments,” the SOTTO convener said.
Dr Pranjal Modi has performed more than 500 liver transplants as well as 1,000 kidney transplants.
In his welcome address, Chairman of Akhil Bharatiya Vikas Parishad Jayantibhai Ahir said, “Let’s start a new day today-Gujarat Foundation day. Let’s make a will of organ donation along with a will of property.”
Dr. Raghav Dixit, Additional Director, Medical Education and Research Development, Gujarat State, congratulated the entire team of Civil Hospital Medicity for achieving the target of 104 organ donations in a very short period of time.
