NE HEALTH BUREAU
COIMBATORE, JULY 31

Coimbatore Orthopaedic Society is organizing “Bone and Joint Day” on Friday, 4th August 2021 to create awareness among the school students and public about first aid to save precious lives in accidents.

  • This year theme is “Strong bone for strong nation”: President Dr Atul Shrivastava
  • The National Bone and Joint Day is an initiation started in 2012 by the then president of Indian Orthopaedic Association, Prof. S. Rajasekaran
  • At least one out of 10 people killed on roads across the world is from India, according to the World Health Organization
  • Most of these deaths occur due to lack of first medical care in first golden hour after accident
  • Indian Orthopaedic Association  has decided to provide training to One Lac students, Police personal, common man (The Missing Link) during Bone & Joint week from 1st August to 7th August 21 and make them life saviours

Dr. P. Dhanasekara Raja, Executive Committee Member, TNOA, Dr. Maj. Kamalanathan, President, Coimbatore Orthopaedic Society and Dr. BRJ Sathish Kumar, Secretary of Coimbatore Orthopaedic Society, Dr. Maheswaran, Treasurer in a joint press statement here said, “For 2023, the current president Dr Atul Shrivastava, has declared “Strong bone for strong nation” as the theme.”

They further said National Bone and Joint Day is being celebrated on 4th of August every year since 2012 and they will highlight various social activities which have been planned for this year. Every year week-long activities starting from 1st of August to 7th of August have been organised throughout the country. The National Bone and Joint Day is an initiation started in 2012 by the then president of Indian Orthopaedic Association, Prof. S. Rajasekaran.

Stating that this year the focus is on deaths occurring due to trauma and accidents in India, Dr. P. Dhanasekara Raja said India ranks number 1 in term of road traffic accident deaths across the 199 countries asper the World Road Statistics. At least one out of 10 people killed on roads across the world is from India, according to the World Health Organization.

The cost of road accidents is borne not only by the victims and their family but by the economy as a whole in terms of untimely deaths, injuries, disabilities and loss of potential income. It is indeed a matter of great concern that despite the continuing efforts of the government in this regard and our commitments for halving fatalities we have not been able to register significant progress on this front.

During the year 2021, a total number of 4,12,432 road accidents have been reported in the country, claiming 1,53,972 lives and causing injuries to 3,84,448 persons. Unfortunately, the worst affected age group in road accidents is 18-45 years, which accounts for about 67 percent of total accidental deaths. Every year, approximately 1.5 lakh people die on India roads, which translate, on an average, into 1,130 accidents and 422 deaths every day or 47 accidents and 18 deaths every hour.

Most of these deaths occur due to lack of first medical care in first golden hour after accident. Many of these accident victims’ life can be saved by providing proper first aid immediately after accident which can very well be provided by any common man or police personal if they are trained for this, he added.

Dr. P. Dhanasekara Raja said this link of proper first aid /basic life support immediately after the accident is missing. We, at Indian Orthopaedic Association, have decided to provide training to One Lac students, Police personal, common man (The Missing Link) during Bone & Joint week from 1st August to 7th August 21 and make them life saviours .This training would be provided by the members of Indian Orthopaedic association all across India. Along with this they will be educated about how to keep bones healthy and strong.

Dr Maj. Kamalanathan said apart from this many activities during this week, experts from this field will give talk on bone health to various members of the public. Free bone density measurement camp has been organised from Aug 1st to 3rd at Ganga Hospital and PSG hospital. Training on first aid, BLS training and bone health has been organised at Ganga Nursing College.
