After this, a discussion program was held with the elephant mahouts and kavadis (caretakers) who are working in various elephant camps in Tamil Nadu. Elephant caretakers explained about their work to the President in this session.

President said, as a part of preserving our national heritage it is our national responsibility to protect our elephants. She was happy to note that the Government is setting up a “State-of-the-art Elephant Conservation Center and Eco Complex” at Theppakadu Elephant Camp to make it a pioneer in Asian elephant conservation.

The President expressed happiness to see the traditional knowledge and experience of the Bettakurumbar, Kattunayakkar, and Malasar tribal communities being utilized to manage the camp. She said, these tribes’ harmonious way of living with nature is invaluable in maintaining the ecological balance and ensuring the well-being of the elephants and the environment in the region. The President said, their involvement showcases the significance of preserving and respecting indigenous wisdom in wildlife conservation efforts.

President stressed that tribal communities are playing an important role in preserving India’s cultural heritage, adding that it is very important to ensure that these communities are given their constitutional rights. Basic amenities should be provided to them, so that they become part of the mainstream, President said.
