AVM Productions’ Sakalakala Vallavan’ that released on 14 August 1982, widened actor Kamal Haasan’s audience base from the “classes” to a hero of the “masses” and was also praised for his fights and dance. Directed by SP Muthuraman and written by Panchu Arunachalam, the film also starred Ambika and Tulasi in pivotal roles. The music of the movie which is memorable for its diverse range of songs was composed by Ilaiyaraaja. The film was a major commercial success and ran for over 175 days in theatres and was the highest-grossing film in Tamil cinema. The film was remade in Hindi as ‘Abhimanyu’ in 1989.
AVM Productions made the film to prove that ‘Ulaganayagan’ Kamal Haasan was a “Master of all arts”, keeping with the title ‘Sakalakala Vallavan’, which translates to the same.
