On Tuesday, Cyclone Michaung hit land, causing continuous heavy rainfall in Chennai. Despite the reduced intensity from Monday, the downpour persisted, bringing the state capital to a halt.

The storm-induced floods disrupted daily life, leading to casualties and damage to properties.

On Tuesday, the Greater Chennai police announced in a statement that 17 individuals lost their lives in different incidents as a result of the floods caused by the cyclone in the city.

Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy reviewed the status of Cyclone Michaung and the progress of relief measures with senior officials.

At the review meeting held at the Camp Office here on Tuesday, the Chief Minister was informed that 9500 persons are being sheltered in 211relief camps. He directed them to provide all essential items like drinking water, food and medicines to the cyclone victims.

The cyclone crossed the coast near Bapatla, they said, adding that the intensity of the cyclone is gradually receding in Tirupati and Nellore districts which have been experiencing heavy rains.
Relief measures are in full swing in rain-hit Nellore and Tirupati districts and the Collectors of Prakasam, Krishna, Guntur and other districts are on high alert, they said.

He told them to restore power supply in all cyclone affected areas immediately and pay compensation within 48 hours to the kin of people who lost lives and livestock besides distributing ration to the affected people using the services of volunteers and staff of the village and ward secretariats.

Special Chief Secretary G. Sai Prasad (Revenue and disaster management), CCLA Secretary Md. Imtiaz and senior officials of the CMO were among those present.

Cyclonic storm Michaung, after leaving a trail of destruction, weakened into a depression over Central Coastal Andhra Pradesh as it crossed the coast on Tuesday. The storm damaged 770-kilometre roads, uprooted 35 trees and killed three livestock, among others.

According to data shared by the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), nearly 40 lakh people from 194 villages and two towns were affected by Michaung’s impact, including the inundation of 25 villages.

Though there was no loss of human life on Tuesday, Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority Director BR Ambedkar said that a four-year-old boy died after a hut wall collapsed on him in Tirupati district on Monday. While another person died in Bapatla district, Superintendent of Police Vakul Jindal said that the cause of death was not related to the cyclone.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its recent bulletin said that the Cyclonic Storm weakened into a deep depression lying centred at about 100 km north-northwest of Bapatla and 50 km southeast of Khammam.

The IMD predicted that the storm to weaken further into a depression in the next 6 hours and further into a Well Marked Low Pressure area during the subsequent 6 hours.

After crossing the coast of neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, the southern districts of Odisha were on alert on Tuesday night as the intensity of rains increased as an impact of the storm.
