NEW DELHI, JAN 29

The Union government on Monday extended the ban on the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) for a further period of five years.

The Home Ministry had declared SIMI an ‘unlawful association’ under stringent provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act on January 31, 2019.

“SIMI is continuing to be involved in fomenting terrorism, disturbing peace and communal harmony in the country which are prejudicial to the sovereignty, security and integrity of India,” the MHA said in a statement.

Several criminal cases have been registered against the organisation and its members under various sections of law including the UAPA, it said.
