NE HEALTH BUREAU
CHENNAI, JUNE 18

The Association of Surgeons of India (ASI), the largest body for Surgeons in the world, on Sunday announced that it will moot prominent display of tariffs for various facilities offered to the patients.

On the sidelines of the ‘Conclave on Quality Management and Accreditation for Hospitals’ and blood donation camp held at its national headquarters in Chennai, Prabal Neogi, National President of ASI told reporters that it will moot a suggestion to all healthcare facilities to prominently display the tariffs they are charging for various services it offers.

The medical fraternity which strives hard for the welfare of the society is implementing various socially-conscious initiatives, including blood donation, free surgeries for the poor and downtrodden. It has taken up initiatives on ‘Safe Surgery & strict adherence to WHO protocols during surgeries’, Dr Neogi said.

To ensure implementation of these two initiatives, ASI will soon bring out a module on safety protocol for surgeons, he added.

Dr Prabal Neogi said, “Apart from our socially-conscious services to the society, we have taken up two other initiatives. One is safe surgery. We have to create awareness among healthcare workers as infection is a huge problem to patient wellbeing, but also drains away economic resources of hospitals. We must reduce these infections by taking simple precautions such as proper hygiene and sterilisation in operation theatres, hand hygiene and ensure that paramedical staff and nurses follow hygienic practices in wards.”

The second initiative is to ensure healthcare professionals and hospitals adhere to protocols and the World Health Organization-stipulated check list while performing a procedure. Surgeons could minimise complications and ensure that certain incidents termed as ‘never events’ are eliminated, he said.

The conclave was attended by the members of the Nursing Home Board-Indian Medical Association Tamil Nadu, the Association of Healthcare Providers (India), and the Consortium of Accredited Healthcare Organisations.

National office bearers of ASI – Pratap Varutae, Secretary, Banwarlal, Treasurer, Maruthu Pandian, director of the Social Welfare Council and Dr Shiva K Misra, Vice President, National Board of Examination; Dr P Sundarraj, Chairman (2024-25), ASI Tamil Nadu Chapter and G. Chandrasekar, Chairman, ASI Chennai City Branch were also present at the media briefing.

Blood donation camps

Hundreds of members of medical fraternity and paramedical staffs donated blood at the camps organized by ASI Chapters around the country, Dr Prabal Neogi added.

The camp was inaugurated by Dr Prabol Noegi in the presence of Pratap Varutae, Secretary, Banwarlal, Treasurer, ASI, and Maruthu Pandian, director of the Social Welfare Council.
