CHENNAI, JULY 1

The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has vowed to stage protests in front of the courts across the state against the three newly-enacted criminal laws by the Centre on July 5, party sources said on Monday.

The legal wing of the party led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin will hold the protests in courts across the state.

The decision to hold state-wide demonstrations against the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyamwas (BSA) was taken in a meeting held on Monday, where a resolution was passed to conduct protest on July 5.

The DMK’s legal wing will also be holding a hunger strike against the three laws on July 6, near the Rajarathna Stadium in Egmore.

The party is also planning to hold discussions on the new criminal laws and has requested ordinary citizens and lawyers from across all political parties to take part in the protest and hunger strike.

The three new criminal laws, namely Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Sanhita replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860; the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), 1973; and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872, which came into effect from today.
