Navrachana University held a special screening of “The Modern in Print”, a documentary by Mala Sinha and Suchitra Balaubrahmanyan, that delves into the intricate art of block printing and its evolution in Mumbai. The film is a compelling commentary on the legacy of textile printing as both an art form and a testament to the city’s transformation.
“The Modern in Print” captures the nuanced journey of block printing in a modernizing Mumbai, highlighting balance the between tradition and contemporary influences. The screening was followed by an insightful panel discussion featuring distinguished figures from the arts and design community: Mala Sinha (textile designer, researcher, and co-founder of Bodhi), Suchitra Balaubrahmanyan (design historian and visiting professor), Dinaz Kalwachawala (documentary filmmaker), Amit Bhavsar (executive producer and music director), Jerry Pinto (poet and novelist), and Francis Corla of Corla – Sauza & Company. The panel provided a lively discussion on the documentary’s themes and shared reflections on Mumbai’s unique role in blending traditional crafts like block printing with modernity.
In her address, Tejalben Amin emphasized Navrachana University’s commitment to promoting art and culture, stating that such screenings offer invaluable platforms for bringing together esteemed professionals to engage in meaningful dialogues.
