Southern Railway has played a pivotal role in supporting CONCOR’s (Container Corporation of India) new automobile traffic initiative, including sustainable logistics. The inaugural run of the “TVS GO GREEN EXPRESS” container train on Thursday, marks a significant milestone in eco-friendly logistics. Launched by CONCOR (Container Corporation of India) in collaboration with Southern Railway, Chennai Port Authority, this initiative exemplifies the seamless integration of rail and road transportation, says an SR release.

Inaugural service flagged off from Jolarpettai Junction to Kamarajar Port Ltd., Ennore
“The container train was flagged off from Jolarpettai Junction to Kamarajar Port Ltd., Ennore, carrying Direct Port Entry (DPE) export containers for M/s TVS Motor Company. Managed by M/s TVS SCS Global Freight Solutions Ltd, the train transported 29 FEUs (Forty-foot Equivalent Units) of automobile commodities, each with an average weight of 20 metric tonnes, bound for African markets.
To support first-mile connectivity, LNG-powered vehicles owned by CONCOR facilitated the initial transportation, marking a significant milestone in achieving a sustainable, multi-modal logistics involving road and rail,” the statement added.
Southern Railway’s Pioneering Role
By facilitating container haulage to Ennore and Chennai Ports, Southern Railway has:
- Identified the potential for three Automobile rakes monthly, reinforcing its commitment to rail-based logistics.
- Contributed significantly to the Green Logistics initiatives of the Government of India and CONCOR.
This initiative ensures seamless container movement between Chennai Ports and key industrial hubs in Tamil Nadu, such as Salem, Hosur, Krishnagiri, and Dharmapuri, as well as southern and south eastern Karnataka, including Bengaluru and Mysuru.
Boosting Port efficiency and trade
Through a combination of LNG (Liquid Natural Gas) vehicles for short-haul connectivity and rail for long-distance transport, the service:
- Offers a cost-effective, multi-modal logistics solution.
- Reduces congestion at port gates, providing a faster, congestion-free entry into ports.
- Reduces the dependence on road transport
- Enhances port efficiency by alleviating bottlenecks and improving turnaround times.
This initiative is a testament to the collaborative efforts of CONCOR, Railways and Chennai Ports Authority in promoting sustainable logistics while supporting economic growth through innovative and eco-friendly transport solutions.
