Former AIADMK minister and MLA Thalavai Sundaram recently criticized the exclusion of elected MLAs and MPs from the Thiruvalluvar State Festival, in which Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is participating.

In this context, a two-minute video created and released by Thalavai Sundaram, highlighting the significance given to Thiruvalluvar during the AIADMK regime, has gone viral in WhatsApp groups across Kanyakumari district.

It has been 25 years since the installation of the Thiruvalluvar statue in Kanyakumari. To mark this occasion, the Chief Minister is participating in the celebration. Meanwhile, the AIADMK’s Kanyakumari East District Secretary and MLA, Thalavai Sundaram, released a video elaborating on the initiatives taken during the AIADMK regime to honor Thiruvalluvar.

The video states:

“On April 15, 1979, the foundation stone for the Thiruvalluvar statue in Kanyakumari was laid by then Prime Minister Morarji Desai in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran (MGR). The expert committee to oversee the rock’s suitability and statue construction was also established during MGR’s tenure. It was during Jayalalithaa’s first term as Chief Minister that ₹1.28 crore was allocated for the statue’s construction—a historical fact!

Being a statue in the middle of the sea, it requires periodic application of a chemical mixture for maintenance. In 2004, under the AIADMK regime, this chemical treatment was undertaken for the first time following orders from Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. The AIADMK government also passed resolutions in the Tamil Nadu Assembly to declare Tirukkural a national literary treasure and instituted an award in Thiruvalluvar’s name. Furthermore, a university was established in Thiruvalluvar’s honor during Jayalalithaa’s tenure.

The DMK government, however, replaced the imperishable Thirukkural inscriptions on state transport buses with its own slogans. Even the 15 workers engaged in maintaining the Thiruvalluvar statue have not been made permanent by the DMK government.”

The video concludes with references to divine rulership principles, indirectly criticizing the current Tamil Nadu government.

AIADMK supporters have been widely sharing this video, making it go viral on social media in Kanyakumari district.
