The 76th Republic Day was celebrated with great patriotic enthusiasm by the Income Tax Department at Income Tax Office Campus, No.121, Mahatma Gandhi Road, Nungambakkam, Chennai-600034. The event was graced by Rajasekhar Reddy Lakkadi, IRS, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (TDS), Chennai, as the Chief Guest. He unfurled the national flag, marking the beginning of the celebrations.

Rajasekhar Reddy Lakkadi, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (TDS), Chennai, addressed the gathering and reiterated that Republic Day gives immense importance in the national life and history of India. The day commemorates the date January 1950, when India’s constitution finally came into practice, making this country a free Republic. The theme of Republic Day 2025 is “Swarnim Bharat – Virasat aur Vikas” (Golden India Heritage and Development) reflects the nation’s rich cultural heritage and its on-going journey of progress.

In his Republic Day address, Rajasekhar Reddy Lakkadi highlighted the pivotal role of the Income Tax Department in nation-building. He underscored the importance of providing quality taxpayer services by leveraging technology and digital tools to simplify processes and foster a taxpayer-friendly environment, thereby reducing unnecessary litigation. He encouraged officers and staff to continue their dedicated efforts in tax collection and service delivery.
“Income Tax Department contributes approximately 54% of tax revenue in the central government. In the current year, we have been given a target of Rs.22,07,000 Crore of revenue which is a very substantial amount in the entire target of the revenue. It provides necessary revenue to the government to ensure security, funding essential services like healthcare, education and infrastructure,” Rajasekhar Reddy Lakkadi added.
He emphasized the importance of the department’s work in achieving these goals.
According to him, “The Tamil Nadu & Puducherry region has been a consistent top contributor to the nation’s direct tax collections, ranking fourth. The region’s target for the financial year 2024-25 is ₹1.38 thousand crore, which accounts for 6.2% of the national target. He stated that with the hard work, dedication and cooperation from all the officers and officials, we have been doing reasonably well for the current year. It is pertinent to mention that during the Financial Year 2024-25, as on date we have issued ₹21,000 crores of tax refunds have been issued which is 20% more than in the previous years, thereby demonstrating the department’s commitment to citizens and the efficiency in our services.”
As part of the celebration, a cultural programme was organised and the Playback Singer Kalaimamani D. Velmurugan and his team performed soulful rendition of patriotic songs and folk songs.
