NE HEALTH BUREAU
BANARAS, SEPT 17

Doctors at Banaras Hindu University’s Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS-BHU) have once again showcased their medical excellence by successfully performing an allogenic bone marrow transplant on a 9-year-old boy suffering from Severe Aplastic Anemia—a rare and life-threatening blood disorder.

A Battle Against a Rare Blood Disorder

The young patient from Varanasi had been struggling with dangerously low blood and platelet levels, requiring frequent transfusions to survive. Severe Aplastic Anemia, caused by the bone marrow’s inability to produce sufficient blood cells, leaves patients highly vulnerable to infections and uncontrolled bleeding. For most children, a bone marrow transplant is the only hope for long-term survival.

Overcoming Critical Challenges

The boy’s case was particularly complex due to his unusually high transfusion needs. With meticulous planning, advanced technology, and round-the-clock monitoring, the transplant team overcame these challenges and successfully guided the child through the high-risk post-transplant recovery phase. Today, his blood counts have returned to normal, and he is recovering without major complications.

Teamwork That Saved a Life

The life-saving procedure was led by Prof. Vineeta Gupta, Professor In-charge of the Division of Pediatric Hematology Oncology/BMT, along with a multi-disciplinary team, including Dr. Priyanka Aggarwal, Dr. Sandeep Kumar, Dr. Ishan Kumar, Prof. Neha Singh, Dr. Naveen, Dr. Chandradeep, junior residents, blood bank technicians, and nursing officers. Their coordinated effort exemplifies BHU’s rising strength in advanced pediatric hematology and oncology care.

Milestone for Eastern Uttar Pradesh

Prof. Vineeta Gupta highlighted that this child is among two recent aplastic anemia patients who successfully underwent bone marrow transplants at BHU. So far, the institute has completed 35 pediatric transplants for conditions such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia, solid tumors, and aplastic anemia. With only a handful of centers in India capable of performing such complex procedures, BHU’s achievement marks a ray of hope for families in Eastern Uttar Pradesh and neighboring states.

A Vision for the Future

Sharing the institute’s plans, Prof. Gupta said: “This success showcases not just the medical expertise at BHU, but also the compassionate, coordinated effort required to manage complex pediatric conditions. Our aim is to expand the pediatric bone marrow transplant program to cover children with Thalassemia major, rare genetic and metabolic disorders such as mucopolysaccharidoses and storage disorders. Our goal is to ensure that no child in this region is denied a second chance at life.”

Prof. S.N. Sankhwar, Director of IMS-BHU, congratulated the doctors and reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to advancing pediatric transplant care.

A New Ray of Hope

For the boy and his family, this successful transplant is nothing short of life-changing. For BHU, it is yet another milestone in establishing itself as a leading center of excellence in pediatric bone marrow transplants, bringing advanced treatment within reach of children in this region.
