CHENNAI, SEPT 28

The death toll in the catastrophic stampede at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and actor Vijay’s rally in Karur rose to 40 on Sunday, after one more victim succumbed to injuries at the government hospital. Over 80 people remain hospitalised, including two in critical condition.

Karur Police have booked TVK general secretary Bussy Anand, Karur West district secretary V. P. Mathiyazhagan, and state office-bearer C. T. Nirmal Kumar for negligence, violation of safety norms, and deficient crowd management. Officials said more charges and names may be added as the probe progresses.

  • Judicial inquiry under retired HC judge; TVK moves Madras HC for independent probe as grief grips Tamil Nadu
  • Chief Minister M. K. Stalin visits the injured, and announced ₹10 lakh compensation for each deceased’s family and ₹1 lakh for those injured, drawn from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund
  • Opposition parties demand strict enforcement of safety protocols for all future large-scale gatherings.

Chaos at the Rally

The tragedy unfolded late Saturday evening at Velusamypuram on Karur’s outskirts, where thousands had gathered since morning. Narrow approach roads, poor lighting, and long delays in Vijay’s arrival contributed to a deadly surge. Many were trampled or suffocated before rescue teams intervened.

Of the victims, 27 were from Karur district; others hailed from Erode, Dindigul, Tiruppur, and Salem. Emur village in Karur lost five residents, including a mother-daughter pair and a 10-year-old child.

Government Response & Compensation

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it “deeply saddening,” expressing solidarity with bereaved families and prayers for the injured.
  • Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan called the loss “unspeakable pain,” extending condolences to relatives and Tamil Nadu’s people.
  • Governor R. N. Ravi said he was anguished and urged stricter safety norms for mass events.

Chief Minister M. K. Stalin air-dashed to Karur, visited survivors and grieving families, and announced ₹10 lakh ex gratia from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to the kin of each deceased and ₹1 lakh to those injured. Calling it “an unprecedented tragedy in Tamil Nadu’s political history,” he ordered a judicial inquiry led by retired High Court judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan to identify lapses and recommend preventive measures.

The Prime Minister’s Office separately announced ₹2 lakh ex gratia from PMNRF for each bereaved family and ₹50,000 for the injured.

TVK chief Vijay, breaking his silence after initial criticism, said his “heart is shattered” and pledged ₹20 lakh to each bereaved family and ₹2 lakh to the injured, apart from assistance through party channels.

Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami visited Karur, accused the government of “serious security failures,” and demanded enforceable protocols for political rallies.

Legal & Political Fallout

The Tamil Nadu DGP G. Venkatraman noted that the rally turnout “vastly exceeded permitted numbers,” overwhelming arrangements. Police have confirmed lapses in lighting, crowd control, and planning.

Meanwhile, TVK has moved the Madras High Court Bench in Madurai, seeking an independent probe into the incident. Deputy general secretary Nirmal Kumar said the court will hear the plea on Monday.

As Karur and adjoining districts conduct mass funerals, grief is compounded by demands for accountability. The judicial commission’s report is expected to be fast-tracked, with political leaders warning that safety protocols for large gatherings can no longer be left to chance.
