The Skilling for AI Readiness (SOAR) program, launched by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), is reshaping India’s education and skilling landscape by integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) learning across schools and teacher training. Aimed at students from Class 6 to Class 12 and educators nationwide, the initiative marks a transformative step towards building a future-ready India in an increasingly digital world.

With the Union Budget 2025–26 allocating ₹500 crore to establish a Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence for Education, the government is signalling a powerful commitment to advancing AI-driven learning and innovation. As of June 2025, over 1,480 apprentices have already been trained in AI-related roles such as AI Data Engineer and Machine Learning Engineer under NAPS-2, setting the pace for India’s AI-skilled workforce of tomorrow.
Empowering Minds: The Mission of SOAR
The SOAR initiative is designed to make AI learning accessible, inclusive, and engaging — fostering awareness, curiosity, and creativity among young minds while equipping educators to guide them effectively.

- Fostering AI Awareness: SOAR introduces AI concepts, machine learning basics, and the ethics of AI use through three targeted 15-hour student modules and a 45-hour teacher training program. This dual focus ensures that both learners and mentors evolve together, cultivating a classroom culture of digital curiosity and responsible innovation.
- Driving Economic Self-Reliance: By preparing students for emerging AI-driven careers, SOAR contributes to India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, strengthening human capital in high-growth sectors such as digital innovation, IT, and data science.
- Building a Tech-Driven Nation: Through early-stage AI education, SOAR aims to position India as a global hub for AI innovation, creating a generation of digitally fluent thinkers capable of solving real-world challenges with smart technology.
AI in the Classroom: A Transformative Leap in Learning

Artificial Intelligence is redefining the education landscape — transforming schools into centres of creativity and collaboration. Aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, SOAR ensures that AI becomes not just a subject, but a way of thinking.
- AI in School Curriculum: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) introduced AI as a subject in Class IX (2019-20) and extended it to Class XI (2020-21). Students now engage in practical projects involving AI applications, skill development, and data-driven problem-solving.
- Centre of Excellence in AI for Education: Backed by the ₹500 crore allocation, this Centre will drive the “chalkboards to chipsets” transformation, promoting the use of AI in Indian languages, personalized learning, and critical thinking. It will also support AICTE-approved institutions and IITs, which are already leading with advanced courses in Deep Learning, Predictive Analytics, and Machine Learning.
- Integration under Skill India Mission: Initiatives such as PMKVY 4.0, NAPS, and the Skill India Digital Hub (SIDH) are embedding AI into vocational and technical training. These programs ensure that the nation’s workforce is future-ready and digitally empowered, from Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) to National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs).
Bridging the Digital Divide: From Classrooms to Careers

SOAR’s inclusive design ensures that students from every region — urban or rural — gain equal access to cutting-edge learning. Through the Skill India Digital Hub, digital tools and AI training are being brought to government and private schools alike, creating a level playing field for all learners.
The initiative also trains educators to blend AI into teaching methodologies, ensuring lessons are interactive, relevant, and reflective of real-world AI applications. By nurturing AI-aware students and AI-ready teachers, SOAR creates a ripple effect that strengthens the nation’s innovation ecosystem.
Skilling for the Future: The Impact of SOAR
- Strategic Alignment with Skill India Mission: SOAR reinforces India’s flagship Skill India initiative by expanding the reach of AI-based skilling to younger learners.
- Driving the Viksit Bharat Vision 2047: By developing a tech-savvy, innovation-driven generation, SOAR aligns perfectly with the national aspiration of a developed, self-reliant India by 2047.
- Promoting Digital Inclusion: The program bridges socio-economic and geographic divides, ensuring equal opportunity in digital education.
- Boosting AI Career Aspirations: Early exposure to AI nurtures interest in high-demand fields, helping reduce the talent gap in AI, data analytics, and automation industries.
A Foundation for the Future
As Artificial Intelligence continues to redefine industries worldwide, India’s strategic focus on AI-driven skilling through initiatives like SOAR sets it apart. The program not only imparts digital literacy but also builds ethical awareness, critical thinking, and problem-solving capabilities among students — the hallmarks of future innovators.
“SOAR is not just about learning AI; it’s about enabling every student and teacher to imagine, innovate, and impact the world through technology,” said a senior official from MSDE.
Through a blend of policy vision, academic reform, and hands-on learning, SOAR is preparing India’s next generation to lead the global AI revolution — responsibly, inclusively, and intelligently.
In Essence
The Skilling for AI Readiness (SOAR) program is more than a curriculum — it’s a national movement to democratize AI education and make every student a potential innovator. By aligning with NEP 2020, Skill India Mission, and the Viksit Bharat @2047 vision, SOAR is shaping a digitally inclusive India ready to create, compete, and conquer in the era of Artificial Intelligence.
