Neeraj’s Journey: From Khandra to the Nation’s Pride

Enrolled in the Indian Army in 2016, Lt Col (Hony) Neeraj Chopra has served with the Rajputana Rifles, a regiment known for its valour and legacy. Born on December 24, 1997, in Khandra village, Panipat district, Haryana, Neeraj’s rise from a small-town athlete to an international icon has been nothing short of inspirational.

Neeraj created history by becoming India’s first-ever Olympic Gold Medalist in track and field at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. His golden throw elevated Indian athletics to the world stage. He continued his stellar form with a Silver Medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 and a Gold Medal at the World Athletics Championships 2023.

With multiple Gold Medals at the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and Diamond League, Neeraj has become a global ambassador of Indian sporting excellence. His personal best throw of 90.23 metres (2025) remains a monumental milestone in Indian athletics.

“This Honour Belongs to Every Indian” – Lt Col (Hony) Neeraj Chopra

Expressing gratitude for the recognition, Neeraj dedicated the honour to the armed forces and the people of India.

“It’s a moment of immense pride and emotion. I have always drawn inspiration from the discipline and dedication of our soldiers. To be part of the Territorial Army is a dream fulfilled. This honour belongs not just to me, but to every Indian who believes in the power of perseverance,” said Lt Col (Hony) Neeraj Chopra.

He also thanked the Indian Army for being a constant pillar of support throughout his sporting journey.

“The Army has taught me the true meaning of service and resilience. Whether on the field or off it, I will continue to strive for the nation’s glory,” he added.

Recognitions and Accolades

In acknowledgment of his phenomenal contributions to Indian sport and national pride, Neeraj Chopra has been honoured with some of the country’s highest civilian and military decorations, including:

  • Padma Shri
  • Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award
  • Arjuna Award
  • Param Vishisht Seva Medal
  • Vishisht Seva Medal

He was granted the Honorary Commission in the Territorial Army by President Droupadi Murmu on April 16, 2025, recognizing not only his sporting achievements but also his embodiment of national character and youth leadership.

A Symbol of India’s Spirit

Neeraj Chopra’s induction as an Honorary Lieutenant Colonel stands as a powerful symbol of the seamless connection between India’s defence forces and its sporting icons. His journey reflects the essence of a nation that thrives on hard work, humility, and honour.

As Defence Minister Rajnath Singh summed it up —

“Neeraj Chopra is not just a champion on the field but also a role model off it. His discipline mirrors that of a soldier, and his achievements inspire every Indian to dream fearlessly. Today, as he dons the uniform, he carries the spirit of India on his shoulders — strong, steadfast, and shining.”

Lt Col (Hony) Neeraj Chopra – Athlete. Soldier. Inspiration.
From javelins to the olive green, his golden journey continues — reminding every Indian that true greatness is forged in service, sacrifice, and relentless pursuit of excellence.
