AHMEDABAD, OCT 30

In a creative twist to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Apollo Cancer Centres (ACCs) has unveiled ‘Check-Olate’, a bar of dark chocolate that carries an empowering message: “Pause. Care. Check yourself.” The initiative aims to inspire women to turn a simple act of indulgence into a powerful act of prevention through regular breast self-examinations.

According to GLOBOCAN, breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer among Indian women, accounting for 13.5% of new cancer cases and 10.6% of total cancer deaths. In Gujarat, the incidence of breast cancer has also shown a steady increase, with an estimated one in every 22 women at risk during her lifetime. Despite this, awareness and screening rates remain low — only 1.6% of women aged 30–69 have ever undergone screening (NCBI).

“When women are healthy, nations prosper. Every woman’s well-being is a force multiplier that strengthens families, communities, and the economy,” said Dr. Preetha Reddy, Executive Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd.

“At Apollo, we see women’s health as a national priority and a shared responsibility. Through Apollo Cancer Centres, we are advancing early detection, enabling timely intervention, and building a culture where proactive care is the norm. The ‘Check-Olate’ initiative reminds women that self-care is not a privilege; it is power — one that fuels a healthier, stronger, and more prosperous India.”

Turning Chocolate into a Symbol of Strength and Self-Care

Each ‘Check-Olate’ bar includes a QR code that links to an animated, step-by-step guide for breast self-examination — making awareness practical, relatable, and accessible.

Actress and author Tisca Chopra, who joined the campaign, said, “Everyone loves chocolate; it brings comfort, warmth, and joy. What makes Check-Olate truly special is how it takes something so universally loved and turns it into a gentle reminder for women to care for themselves. Through something as simple as a bar of dark chocolate, it encourages regular breast self-examination. I think that’s such a creative and thoughtful way to turn awareness into action and empower women to truly understand their health.”

Dr. Anagha Zope, Lead Consultant, Breast and Oncoplastic Surgeon, Apollo Cancer Centres, Ahmedabad, explained, “When it comes to breast cancer, early detection isn’t just important — it’s lifesaving. At ACC, we’ve seen countless women saved through timely diagnosis and treatment. Check-Olate transforms a moment of indulgence into a moment of empowerment — reminding every woman that a few minutes of self-examination each month can make all the difference.”

Echoing her view, Dr. Shubha Sinha, Consultant Breast Onco Surgeon, Apollo Cancer Centres, Ahmedabad, added, “Awareness is the first step towards prevention. Just a few minutes of self-examination each month can lead to early detection and improved outcomes. The goal is to make self-care second nature — because every woman deserves the chance to detect early, act early, and live fully.”

Stories of Courage and Early Detection

Among the voices sharing their journey was Rinku Agrawal, Senior Scientist at ISRO and TEDx Speaker, who turned her battle with breast cancer into a story of strength.

“Cancer is not the end of life. Life is much beyond it,” she said. “I chose to face it with courage and turned a painful chapter into a new beginning. Cancer patients don’t seek sympathy — they need love, care, and genuine support. Every act of kindness and understanding can light the path of recovery.”

Three other cancer warriors, including a medical practitioner, also shared how timely self-examination led to early diagnosis and full recovery, underscoring the critical importance of awareness in saving lives.

Health and Healing in Every Bite

Dark chocolate was deliberately chosen for Check-Olate because of its proven health benefits — rich in antioxidants and flavonoids that help reduce inflammation, support heart health, and uplift mood. According to NCBI research, moderate consumption of dark chocolate can positively influence cardiovascular and metabolic well-being, making it a perfect blend of comfort and care.

As Dr. Reddy summed up, “Check-Olate is more than an awareness campaign — it’s a movement. It’s about reminding women that self-examination takes only a few minutes but can save a lifetime.”

By combining empathy, innovation, and everyday indulgence, Apollo Cancer Centres is redefining how health awareness connects with emotion and creativity — because sometimes, the sweetest reminder can also be the most lifesaving one.
