The D.Y. Patil University School of Hospitality Management & Tourism Studies came alive with color, flavor, and creativity during the Pumpkin Festival – Halloween Theme, held on October 31, 2025. The event, conceptualised and executed entirely by students, showcased their culinary artistry, design innovation, and teamwork, transforming the campus into a festive carnival of imagination.

Renowned culinary mentor and Navjeevan Express Food & Hospitality Editor Dr. Chef Kaviraj Khialani graced the occasion as Guest of Honor and Judge, evaluating the students’ creations and encouraging them to nurture their passion for hospitality and gastronomy.
A Halloween Extravaganza of Talent and Taste
The festival opened with a warm welcome from Aarti, Vice-Principal of the School, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a captivating Halloween-themed ramp walk featuring more than 25 student participants from hospitality and cabin crew courses.

“At D.Y. Patil University, we believe in learning by doing,” said Aarti, Vice-Principal. “Events like these give our students a platform to express their creativity, leadership, and teamwork — essential qualities for a successful hospitality career.”
Students showcased remarkable culinary innovations such as pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin paneer nachos, pumpkin falafels with hummus and pita, and even a French-inspired pumpkin–melon centerpiece crafted by Deepak Dawda, who won accolades for his creativity and presentation finesse.
The mocktail segment added zest to the event, featuring exotic blends of berries, kokum, and cranberry, skillfully presented by the students.
Inspiring the Future Hoteliers
The competition concluded with a thrilling Q&A finale for ramp walk participants, designed to test their communication skills, poise, and presence of mind. Winners received gifts, certificates, and signed copies of Dr. Chef Khialani’s cookbooks as mementos of the occasion.

“We constantly strive to combine knowledge with creativity,” shared Vandana Maira, Faculty Coordinator and French Language Instructor. “The Pumpkin Festival is a reflection of how our students can blend artistry, professionalism, and global hospitality standards.”
Dr. Chef Khialani, lauding the initiative, remarked: “The hospitality industry thrives on innovation and confidence. Events like this nurture essential skills — from culinary craft to guest experience management. Mentoring young hoteliers to think creatively and perform with passion is key to building the future of our industry.”
Spirit of Celebration and Learning
The event culminated with a heartfelt vote of thanks, acknowledging the dedication of the students, faculty, and organizing team led by Parag Kotak, a second-year student who initiated the idea and spearheaded its execution.
As the festival drew to a close, Dr. Chef Khialani noted how such experiential engagements help students bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world hospitality demands. The day ended on a high note — filled with memories, motivation, and a renewed passion for excellence in the culinary arts.
“Our students’ enthusiasm, creativity, and discipline reflect the spirit of D.Y. Patil University — where we not only teach hospitality but live it,” said Dean, School of Hospitality Management & Tourism Studies.
