CHENNAI, NOV 11

In a landmark step towards ecological restoration and sustainable community development, Flex, a global leader in electronics manufacturing and supply chain solutions, has inaugurated the restored Medavakkam Periya Eri Lake, reaffirming its long-term commitment to environmental conservation through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

Funded by the Flex Foundation and implemented in partnership with the Thaagam Foundation, the project exemplifies how corporate environmental stewardship and citizen participation can jointly revive natural ecosystems within urban spaces. The initiative was carried out under the expert supervision of the Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust (CRRT), in collaboration with local authorities and residents.

  • Lake restoration project transforms urban ecosystem through public–private partnership and local collaboration
  • ₹50-lakh CSR investment by Flex Foundation enhances groundwater recharge, biodiversity, and public recreation

Reviving a Lifeline for the Community

The restoration of the Medavakkam Periya Eri, one of the key water bodies in the Tambaram region, marks a major milestone in water conservation efforts. The rejuvenated lake will help replenish groundwater tables, support local biodiversity, and serve as a sustainable recreational hub for residents.

Speaking at the inauguration, Sabuj D. Choudhary, Vice President – Legal & Managing Director, Flex, said:

“At Flex, sustainability is woven into the fabric of our operations. Through the Flex Foundation, we are proud to contribute to the revival of this vital water body, which not only restores the local ecology but also strengthens our shared responsibility toward a greener, more resilient future.”

Tambaram MLA R.S. Rajiv Gandhi, who graced the event as Guest of Honour, commended the initiative, emphasizing that the project sets a strong precedent for community–corporate collaboration.

“The rejuvenation of Medavakkam Periya Eri will bring long-term benefits to residents—improving groundwater, curbing flooding, and offering a clean, green environment for future generations,” he said.

A CSR Project with Lasting Impact with an allocation of ₹50 lakh, the initiative includes:

  • Eco-park development with native trees and sustainable landscaping
  • Bund pathway and scenic promenade to encourage community engagement
  • Comprehensive desilting and embankment strengthening to ensure flood resilience
  • Beautification and clean-up drives led by local volunteers and environmental groups

The project has been widely appreciated as a replicable model for urban lake restoration, promoting climate resilience and environmental education.

Flex Foundation: Driving Positive Global Change

Established in 2002, the Flex Foundation supports philanthropic initiatives across the globe, fostering environmental, educational, and community well-being projects. Its collaboration with the Thaagam Foundation in Tamil Nadu stands as a testament to Flex’s dedication to sustainable, scalable, and socially impactful CSR programmes.
