GANDHINAGAR, NOV 18

IIT Gandhinagar (IITGN) has taken a decisive step toward strengthening India’s National Critical Minerals Mission by hosting senior officials from the Gujarat Mineral Research Industrial Consultancy Society (GMRICS) — promoted by the Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) — on November 18, 2025. The meeting culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that lays the foundation for long-term collaboration in mineral exploration, critical minerals research, technology innovation and mining-sector human resource development.

The visiting delegation included Dr D.K. Sinha, CEO, GMRICS; Mr A.K. Makadia, Senior General Manager (Tech-I), GMDC; and Dr Shailesh D. Dav, General Manager – Human Resource, GMDC.
Drawing from decades of experience at the Atomic Minerals Directorate (AMD) and the Department of Atomic Energy, Dr Sinha underscored the national urgency of building scientific depth in critical minerals, describing the domain as “the defining scientific and strategic frontier of the coming decades.”

He emphasised that these minerals are fundamental to renewable energy technologies, electronics, advanced manufacturing and national security, noting that “countries with strong mineral research ecosystems will hold significant geopolitical advantages.”

The newly signed MoU is expected to unlock a wide spectrum of collaborative opportunities — including joint projects, fieldwork, internships, multi-institutional research, and knowledge-exchange programmes. Students and researchers from IITGN will gain access to advanced laboratories, specialised instrumentation, and real-world field sites, enabling hands-on learning and industry-relevant research.

Faculty from both IITGN and GMRICS/GMDC will engage in expert lectures, short-term courses, symposia, workshops, and conferences that bring together stakeholders from academia, industry and government — strengthening India’s emerging critical minerals ecosystem.

Commenting on the collaboration, Prof Vimal Mishra, Dean, Research & Development, IITGN, said:
“This collaboration will enhance India’s critical mineral research ecosystem, building technical capacity and developing solutions that support national priorities in mineral exploration and resource sustainability.”

The partnership reflects a shared commitment to advancing scientific knowledge, driving innovation, and supporting India’s long-term economic and technological leadership in the strategically vital minerals sector.
