In a significant political development, actor-politician Vijay is preparing to resume his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) election campaign, weeks after the Karur tragedy that claimed 41 lives during his massive rally. Senior TVK functionaries confirmed to this portal that Salem has emerged as the frontrunner to host Vijay’s high-stakes comeback meeting.
Vijay had halted all campaign activity after the crowd surge in Karur, a stampede-like incident that left the party leadership shaken. “He has still not fully recovered from the emotional trauma. It affected him deeply, far beyond what the public saw,” a senior TVK strategist told this correspondent.

Determination to Continue Political Journey
Despite the emotional setback, Vijay attended the recently convened Special General Committee and Executive Committee meetings in Chennai. According to insiders, he delivered a firm message:
“Our political journey will not stop. If anything, the events in Karur remind us how much responsibility we carry,” Vijay is learnt to have told the closed-door gathering.
He also used the platform to launch a sharp critique against the ruling DMK government, accusing it of administrative lapses and governance failures — remarks that drew “thunderous approval” from district secretaries, according to party sources.
Salem District Pushes for First Rally
It was during these meetings that leaders from multiple districts — particularly Salem — urged him to relaunch the tour from their region.
“People here are waiting for him. Salem has always been one of TVK’s strongest bases. His next rally must start here,” a Salem district secretary said.
TVK insiders say Vijay has agreed in principle, paving the way for a formal announcement soon. “The leadership is assessing the logistics. The final call will be made by the general secretary after reviewing security protocols,” a senior office-bearer confirmed.
Enhanced Security Framework
In light of the Karur incident, the party is working closely with law enforcement. A senior police officer familiar with the preparations said: “Any future rally involving a crowd of this scale will require strict compliance with crowd-control norms, barricading plans, medical teams on standby and real-time monitoring. Permissions will be assessed carefully.”
State-level TVK office-bearers are expected to visit Salem shortly to inspect venues, coordinate with the police, and finalise crowd-management measures to avoid any repeat of the Karur tragedy.
Base Energised Ahead of Elections
With the Assembly elections only months away, anticipation is soaring among TVK cadres. According to a senior strategist:
“If Vijay restarts from Salem, it will be a morale-boosting moment for the party. Cadre enthusiasm is already peaking.”
Party workers believe the comeback rally could set the tone for TVK’s statewide mobilisation and shape the momentum for the upcoming polls.
