Tamil Nadu launches ‘TN 100 Chip Varsity’ — a bold leap for home-grown semiconductor talent

CHENNAI, DEC 1

In a decisive step to deepen Tamil Nadu’s presence in the semiconductor value chain, Guidance Tamil Nadu, in collaboration with industry partner iVP Semi, today announced the launch of the “TN 100 Chip Varsity” programme — a pioneering initiative to embed chip-design facilities across engineering colleges in the State and nurture the next generation of semiconductor professionals.

Under this initiative, a statewide network of chip-design labs will be established within participating engineering colleges, with a dual mandate: to facilitate the development of 100 new chip designs, and to train 5,000 students annually in advanced semiconductor design skills. The move aims to build a robust in-state talent pipeline capable of powering India’s growing demand for home-grown chips.

This new drive builds on the broader ambitions of the recently unveiled Tamil Nadu Semiconductor Mission 2030 (TNSM 2030), which seeks to make the State a leading hub for chip design, testing, manufacturing and packaging. The Mission has already proposed subsidies and prototyping grants for fabless design firms, and the creation of new Centres of Excellence to support design-driven innovation. According to the official plan:

  • Engineering colleges across Tamil Nadu will host chip-design labs, offering students hands-on exposure to design tools and workflows.
  • Each batch of students enrolled under TN 100 Chip Varsity will receive systematic training in semiconductor design — building IP, working on SoCs, and conventional IC design — thereby enhancing employability in a high-growth sector.
  • The State and private partners will provide necessary infrastructure, industry mentorship, and possibly link-ups with fabless firms and R&D organisations, making this a comprehensive ecosystem for learning and innovation.

State and industry leaders see this as a game-changer. With global semiconductor supply chains under pressure and India pushing for domestic self-reliance, Tamil Nadu is betting on home-grown talent and design competence to attract investment, enable localisation and create high-value jobs. The scheme also aligns with national efforts to reduce dependence on imports and build a resilient electronics manufacturing ecosystem across India.

With the launch of TN 100 Chip Varsity, Tamil Nadu takes a firm stride towards becoming a national powerhouse of semiconductor design, offering students and engineers a chance to contribute directly to India’s tech future — from chips made in their own backyard. The programme is likely to open new opportunities for R&D, technology startups, and collaborations between academia and industry, paving the way for a self-sustaining semiconductor ecosystem built on local skills and innovation.
