Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER) observed World Disability Day with the powerful theme “D(Th)isability: A Right, Not a Request.” The event became a moving celebration of human resilience, featuring two alumni whose extraordinary life journeys exemplify courage, purpose, and the conviction to rise above every challenge.

  • Stories of courage and determination inspire students and educators alike
  • Event champions inclusion, dignity and equal opportunity for every learner
  • Two remarkable alumni prove that ability begins where barriers end

SRIHER reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive education, accessible infrastructure, research opportunities, and pathways to meaningful employment, continuing its mission to empower students with disabilities to thrive both academically and professionally.

Turning Adversity Into Purpose: The Journey of Dr P A Abhinand

Dr P A Abhinand, Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioinformatics, lives with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a progressive genetic condition that causes muscle weakening due to motor neuron degeneration. Dependent on a caregiver for all daily activities, he nevertheless stands tall through scholarship, leadership, and service.

Dr Abhinand has published 20 research papers in reputed peer-reviewed journals and authored two book chapters, building a body of work that inspires peers and students alike. His presence is a powerful reminder that resilience is not the absence of struggle—but the ability to turn challenges into impact.

Representing the SMA community on national platforms, he advocates tirelessly through Cure SMA India, urging free nationwide access to the critical MLPA diagnostic test to ensure early detection and affordable treatment for families across the country.

Scholarship With Strength: The Inspiring Path of Sushmitha Murali

The second speaker, Sushmitha Murali, born with dwarfism, is a research scholar at the Sri Ramachandra Faculty of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. Her academic journey reflects an unshakable commitment to excellence and inclusion.

A recipient of the UGC National Fellowship for Persons with Disabilities, Sushmitha has authored over ten research papers in prestigious Q1 international journals. She is an active disability-rights advocate, engaging in panel discussions and supporting visually impaired learners through mentorship and accessible learning initiatives.

Her story continues to inspire fellow scholars, proving that determination can outgrow every limitation.

A Community United for Inclusion

Faculty members, medical students, and paramedical trainees from across SRIHER participated in the event, reaffirming the institution’s belief that every individual deserves the right to learn, grow, and lead with dignity.

The celebration served as a powerful reminder that inclusion is not a favour—it’s a responsibility. And through the journeys of Abhinand and Sushmitha, students witnessed first-hand how courage, intellect, and purpose can transform lives and societies.
