In a landmark celebration of the superstar’s 50 iconic years in cinema, Soundarya Rajinikanth has announced the grand re-release of the 1999 blockbuster Padayappa on December 12, 2025 — a move that has set the Tamil film world and social media on fire.

  • Epic re-release on Dec 12 to honour Rajinikanth’s golden career milestone
  • Soundarya’s announcement sets social media ablaze with nostalgia and excitement
  • Fans, celebrities hail the return of a film that shaped Tamil cinema history

Sharing the announcement on X, Soundarya wrote that the film’s return is a tribute to “50 unforgettable years” of Rajinikanth’s unmatched legacy, adding that Padayappa remains one of his “most iconic creations,” produced by the star himself. She also confirmed that Rajinikanth will feature in a special video, reminiscing about the making of the cult classic — a conversation set to be released on Sunday.

“For the first time ever, the film with a story crafted from his heart returns to the big screen after 25 years… More than a movie, it is an emotion,” Soundarya posted, unveiling a teaser that sent fans into a frenzy.

Cine Industry & Fan Reactions Flood Social Media

The announcement sparked an avalanche of reactions:

  • Veteran actress Khushbu Sundar wrote, “Padayappa coming back to theatres is a festival by itself. Perfect tribute to a true cinema legend.”
  • Filmmaker K S Ravikumar, who wrote and directed the original, reshared the announcement with the caption: “Honoured that this story is returning to the screens that made it immortal.”
  • Music lovers trended A. R. Rahman’s chartbusters with hashtags like #MinsaraKanna and #EnPeruPadayappa, celebrating the soundtrack that defined a generation.
  • Fans across India and overseas shared nostalgic posters, theatre photographs and personal stories of watching Padayappa during its historic 1999 run.
  • The hashtag #TheReturnOfPadayappa topped trending charts within hours, with many calling it the “biggest re-release event in Tamil cinema history.”

A Film That Became a Cultural Phenomenon

Directed by K. S. Ravikumar, the film featured Rajinikanth in a powerful role opposite legendary actor Sivaji Ganesan.

  • Sivaji Ganesan played Neelambari’s father, a respected village elder and uncle to Padayappa.
  • His scenes with Rajinikanth were widely praised for their emotional depth, dignity and screen presence.
  • Padayappa is especially remembered for bringing together two giants of Tamil cinema — Rajinikanth and Sivaji — in what became one of Sivaji’s final major appearances.

The ensemble cast included Ramya Krishnan, Lakshmi, Radha Ravi, Nassar, Abbas, Sithara and Preetha.

Ramya Krishnan’s portrayal of Neelambari — a fierce, stylish antagonist driven by vengeance — remains one of Tamil cinema’s most celebrated performances. Her character’s unforgettable rivalry with Padayappa became a pop-culture staple, inspiring memes, dialogues, and countless reinterpretations even today.

Rahman’s timeless music added to the film’s mass appeal, with every track still enjoying massive recall value.

A Mega Re-Release for a Mega Milestone

With four generations of fans ready to return to theatres, trade circles expect Padayappa’s re-release to be nothing short of a cultural event. The restoration, promotional material and Rajinikanth’s upcoming reflective video have all heightened anticipation.

On December 12, Tamil Nadu — and indeed, fans worldwide — are set to witness not just the revival of a classic, but the celebration of a phenomenon who has ruled hearts for five decades.
