NE ENVIRONMENT BUREAU
WASHINGTON, DC, DEC 9

In a landmark global recognition for India’s conservation movement, Anant Ambani, founder of the wildlife conservation initiative Vantara, has been honoured with the Global Humanitarian Award for Animal Welfare by the Global Humane Society—the international arm of the American Humane Society, the oldest and largest animal welfare certifying body in the US.

At just — and as the first Asian ever to receive this distinction — Anant Ambani now joins a rare league of global icons in animal welfare, making this the most significant international conservation honour ever bestowed on an Indian.

A Visionary Turning Compassion into Global Impact

The Global Humane Society cited Anant Ambani’s “visionary leadership”, evidence-based welfare programmes and a transformative, science-driven approach to conservation as the reasons behind the award. Vantara, they noted, has redefined what large-scale animal rescue, rehabilitation and long-term species preservation can achieve.

Dr. Robin Ganzert, President & CEO, Global Humane Society, said: “Vantara receiving the Global Humane Certified™ distinction reflected not only excellence in care, but a profound dedication to giving every animal dignity, healing and hope. And there is no greater champion of that vision than Mr. Anant Ambani, whose leadership has set a new global standard for compassion in action.”

She added:

“Vantara represents one of the most extraordinary commitments to animal welfare anywhere in the world… it is more than a rescue center, it is a sanctuary of healing. The ambition, scale, and heart behind Vantara have set a new benchmark for what modern animal welfare can look like.”

“Sarva Bhuta Hita”: The Philosophy Behind Vantara

Accepting the honour, Anant Ambani said, “I thank Global Humane Society for this honor. For me, it reaffirms a timeless principle, sarva bhuta hita, the wellbeing of all beings. Animals teach us balance, humility and trust. Through Vantara, our purpose is to give every life dignity, care and hope, guided by the spirit of seva. Conservation is not for tomorrow; it is a shared dharma we must uphold today.”

The Global Humanitarian Award has historically been reserved for exceptional, lifelong champions whose work reshaped the world of animal protection. Past honorees include Shirley MacLaine, John Wayne, Betty White, and US Presidents John F Kennedy and Bill Clinton.

Why Vantara Stands Apart: A First-of-Its-Kind Model from India

Vantara completed one of the world’s most rigorous evaluations to earn the Global Humane Certified™ status. The audit assessed:

  • Nutrition and water standards
  • Veterinary & behavioural care
  • Safety and enrichment
  • Staff training and welfare expertise
  • Habitat lighting, environmental quality
  • Species-specific needs
  • Opportunities for natural behaviour

What sets Vantara apart is its integrated conservation model, combining:

Ex situ care

World-class rescue, rehabilitation and lifetime care for vulnerable and endangered animals.

In situ conservation

Restoration of native ecosystems, breeding programmes and reintroduction of threatened or even extinct-in-the-wild species.

This twin-track model places India in the global spotlight for pioneering a long-term, science-led, humanitarian approach to wildlife protection.

India’s Conservation Voice at a Global Gathering

The ceremony was attended by some of the world’s leading conservation authorities, including:

  • Dr. Jon Paul Rodríguez, Former Chair, IUCN Species Survival Commission
  • Matt James, Chief Animal Officer, Colossal Biosciences
  • William Street, President & CEO, Zoo Knoxville
  • Thomas Schmid, President & CEO, Columbus Zoo
  • Dr. Michael Adkesson, President & CEO, Brookfield Zoo Chicago
  • Kathleen Dudzinski, Founder, Dolphin Communication Project

Prominent Indian conservationists Dr. Neelam Khaire, Dr. V.B. Prakash, and Dr. K.K. Sarma were also present, underscoring India’s growing leadership in global wildlife protection.

A New Global Standard—Led from India

Founded in 1877, the American Humane Society has been at the forefront of nearly every major animal welfare milestone for almost 150 years. Under Dr. Ganzert’s leadership, its certifications have become the world’s most respected benchmarks for humane care.

With Anant Ambani’s recognition, India now stands at the centre of global conservation conversations, and Vantara’s model is being hailed as a template for the future of wildlife protection worldwide—combining compassion, science, and cultural philosophy.
