CBI set to question TVK Chief Vijay in Karur stampede case

CHENNAI, DEC 13

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is preparing to question Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay in connection with the Karur stampede tragedy that claimed 41 lives and left over 110 people injured during a campaign event held at Veluchamipuram on September 27, according to sources.

  • Supreme Court-monitored probe enters crucial phase
  • Focus on crowd management, safety norms and organiser accountability
  • TN political parties react as spotlight turns to rally leadership

The move comes as the Supreme Court-mandated CBI probe enters a decisive phase, following the apex court’s interim order transferring the investigation from state agencies and placing it under close judicial monitoring.

CBI Probe Nears Key Political Figure

Party functionaries questioned; focus shifts to leadership role

CBI officials have already examined several senior TVK office-bearers, including State General Secretary Bussy Anand, Joint Secretaries Nirmal Kumar and Adhav Arjun, and Karur West District Secretary Mathiyazhagan.

According to sources, the leaders were questioned on event planning, mobilisation strategy, security arrangements, and coordination with local authorities, and were asked to submit documents related to permissions and crowd control measures.

With this preliminary round completed, investigators are now reportedly preparing to question Vijay himself to ascertain his role, responsibilities and oversight in connection with the event.

Questioning Likely in Chennai Amid Security Concerns

CBI weighs logistics, law-and-order sensitivities

Sources indicated that the CBI is considering Chennai as the venue for questioning, citing security and logistical challenges involved in summoning the TVK chief to Karur, given the heightened public attention and emotional sensitivity surrounding the case.

Officials are said to be examining crowd surge dynamics, emergency response delays, barricading arrangements, and whether standard operating procedures for large political gatherings were followed.

The investigation continues under the supervision of a monitoring committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi, underscoring the gravity of the tragedy and the need for institutional accountability.

Political Reactions Pour In Across Tamil Nadu

Accountability, safety norms dominate political discourse

The developments have triggered sharp reactions from across the Tamil Nadu political spectrum.

Leaders from the DMK reiterated that the tragedy must be viewed as a systemic failure in crowd management, asserting that “no individual or organisation should be above scrutiny when public lives are lost.” The party maintained that the CBI probe must be allowed to proceed without political pressure.

The AIADMK demanded time-bound completion of the investigation, calling the Karur incident “one of the deadliest campaign-related crowd disasters in recent memory” and stressing the need to fix responsibility to prevent future tragedies.

The BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit echoed calls for strict accountability, stating that political rallies must adhere to uniform safety protocols, regardless of party affiliation or public stature of leaders.

TVK Responds: ‘Faith in Judiciary, Will Cooperate Fully’

Party terms probe impartial, urges restraint

Reacting to reports of the impending questioning, TVK leaders said the party has full faith in the judiciary and the CBI-led investigation.

In a brief statement, senior TVK functionaries said the party and its leadership would “extend complete cooperation to the investigating agency”, adding that the tragedy was deeply painful and that “truth and accountability must emerge through a fair and transparent process.”

The party also appealed for restraint in public commentary, urging political rivals not to pre-judge the outcome of an ongoing investigation.

A Tragedy That Redefined Political Accountability

Safety at mass rallies under renewed scrutiny

The Karur stampede has reignited national debate on crowd safety, permissions for mass political events, emergency preparedness, and the responsibility of organisers and leaders in managing large public gatherings.

As the CBI probe progresses under Supreme Court supervision, the case is being closely watched as a test of institutional accountability, with potential implications for how political campaigns are conducted across the country.
