Tamil Nadu’s TVK political rally in Erode gets green signal: A crucial litmus test after the Karur tragedy

CHENN, DEC 15

In a significant political development, the Tamil Nadu police have granted permission for Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s (TVK) public rally in Erode on December 18, marking the resumption of the party’s campaign activities after being stalled following the deadly stampede in Karur this year.

The decision, following detailed inspections and strict compliance checks, allows the event to take place near the Vijayapuri Amman Temple, Vijayamangalam toll gate, with venue rent and a security deposit paid as part of conditions laid down by authorities. The administration cited adherence to crowd control, traffic management, and public safety norms as prerequisites for the green signal.

Police have reportedly imposed over 80 conditions for the rally and capped attendance at around 20,000–25,000 people, with entry limited to pass holders and strict crowd management protocols, including deployment of volunteers and emergency arrangements.

TVK Leaders: Confidence Amid Caution

TVK’s leadership has expressed confidence and readiness for the rally. K.A. Sengottaiyan, the party’s chief coordinator and a seasoned politician recently inducted into TVK, stated that preparations are in full swing and public support remains strong, positioning the rally as a crucial test of organisational strength.

Another senior TVK functionary emphasised that this event is more than a political meet — it is a demonstration of renewed commitment to electoral mobilisation and safety protocols, especially after the party’s introspection post-Karur.

Various TVK leaders assert that public enthusiasm remains undiminished despite the tragic events in September, with the party taking painstaking steps to ensure that security and crowd regulation are prioritised over theatrics.

Opposition Voices and Political Reactions

Political commentators and opposition figures have weighed in cautiously. Leaders from the DMK and other major regional parties say that while democratic rights to assembly must be upheld, the trauma of the Karur stampede cannot be overlooked. Some have urged TVK to ensure maximum transparency around crowd safety and emergency response mechanisms, warning that any lapse could cost lives and credibility.

Sources aligned with rival parties have also pointed to the continuing rumble over TVK’s organisational preparedness, arguing that the rally should not be seen simply as a show of strength but as a demonstration of responsibility towards public welfare ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls.

Political Context and Stakes

The Erode rally comes at a time when TVK — led by prominent film star-turned-politician Vijay — is trying to consolidate a political base distinct from the long-entrenched Dravidian parties in Tamil Nadu. The party’s pause in public events after the Karur stampede — which claimed dozens of lives — was seen by many analysts as a critical juncture in TVK’s rise.

By successfully navigating state regulations and reinstating its public outreach, TVK aims to signal to voters that it can organise mass events safely and lawfully, even as the 2026 elections draw closer.

Political observers note that the Erode event will be a barometer of TVK’s ground strength, potentially influencing alliance equations and electoral strategies in western Tamil Nadu and beyond.
