In a significant step towards nurturing scientific temper, innovation and practical learning among arts students, SR Mehta Arts College, a constituent of the Navgujarat Group of Colleges, successfully organised a two-day hands-on workshop on emerging technologies under the banner of its Innovation Club on the college campus.

Designed to move beyond textbook learning, the workshop aimed at introducing students to real-world technological applications, encouraging experimentation and cultivating a mindset of inquiry and innovation. Around 75 students actively participated in the programme, engaging closely with live demonstrations and expert-led interactions.

The workshop was conducted by expert trainer Jeet Parihar, who introduced students to a wide range of modern technological tools and devices, including flying drones, microscopes, solar panels, rain detection sensors, sound detection sensors, ultrasonic sensor-based automatic door systems, servo motors and home automation technologies.

A major highlight of the programme was the Home Automation module, where students were trained on the ESP8266 microcontroller board configured with RemoteXY software. This session provided participants with hands-on understanding of how smart homes and automated systems are designed, controlled and implemented in real-life scenarios, making technology both accessible and relatable for arts students.

Speaking on the initiative, Dr. Darsha Jani, Principal, SR Mehta Arts College, said, “Our objective is to inculcate scientific thinking and problem-solving skills among students, irrespective of their academic stream. This workshop reflects our commitment to holistic education where arts students are equally empowered to understand and engage with emerging technologies shaping the future.”

Dr. Shobhana Nair, Coordinator of the Innovation Club, highlighted the broader vision behind the programme, stating, “Innovation today is interdisciplinary. Through such hands-on workshops, we aim to break the fear of technology and inspire students to explore, question and innovate. The enthusiastic participation of students reaffirms the relevance of such initiatives.”

Expert trainer Jeet Parihar emphasised the importance of experiential learning, noting, “When students see technology working in front of them and get to experiment with it, learning becomes meaningful. The curiosity and responsiveness shown by the students during the workshop was truly encouraging.”

The workshop reinforced SR Mehta Arts College’s focus on future-ready education, equipping students with practical exposure, technological awareness and innovation-driven learning, while fostering confidence to engage with emerging scientific and digital advancements.
