The exhilarating Jallikattu season has ignited youth enthusiasm across Madurai district as the traditional bull-taming events unfold one after another during the Pongal 2026 harvest festival celebration. The multi-venue spectacle began with Avaniyapuram, surged ahead at Palamedu, and gears up for a grand finale at Alanganallur this weekend, drawing spirited participation from young tamers and roaring support from spectators.

The first major Avaniyapuram Jallikattu kicked off on January 15, with online registration seeing nearly 1,100 bulls and hundreds of youthful tamers ready to test their skills at the Vaadivasal entry point. A large LED screen was installed to show live scorecards, and safety measures included ambulances, medical teams and reinforced barricades. Attractive prizes such as a car and a tractor were on display for top performers, welcoming participants into a festive yet competitive spirit.
Continuing the adrenaline rush, the second leg at Palamedu’s Manjamalai Riverbed was flagged off on Friday by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin. More than 1,000 bulls and nearly 500 tamers took part under heavy security deployment, as police worked to manage the enthusiastic crowds. Prizes sponsored by political leaders again included a car for the top tamer and a tractor for the best bull. Popular actor Soori added star power to the event, sharing his emotional connection with the tradition.
Excitement is building toward the grand finale at Alanganallur on January 17, which will be inaugurated by Chief Minister M K Stalin. Special infrastructure such as reinforced Vaadivasal, expanded spectator galleries and arrangements for international tourists show how the sport’s cultural appeal continues to grow alongside modern enhancements like LED scoring technology.
Throughout the three-day festival, youth participation has been at the heart of Jallikattu’s enduring legacy as a traditional sport that blends courage, community pride and celebration during the Pongal season.
