In a landmark Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative designed to safeguard the health of India’s truck and commercial vehicle drivers—the backbone of the nation’s logistics and economy—the country’s first “Highway Hero+ Smart Clinic” has been launched at the M D Motors ATS Centre in Bakrol, Ahmedabad.
The clinic, spearheaded by the All-India Transporters Welfare Association (AITWA) with CSR support from BLR Logistics Ltd and infrastructure provided by M D Motors, offers completely free, comprehensive medical screening and teleconsultation services to truck and commercial vehicle drivers.
This pioneering facility addresses a critical but often overlooked reality: long-distance drivers face high risks of undiagnosed hypertension, diabetes, cardiac problems, fatigue-related disorders, hearing loss, and respiratory illnesses due to prolonged driving hours, irregular sleep, poor diet, and stressful working conditions.
Healthcare experts note that early detection through preventive screening can significantly reduce road accidents caused by fatigue, poor vision, or untreated medical conditions, while also improving drivers’ quality of life and longevity.
A First-of-Its-Kind Free Health Lifeline for Drivers
Typically, comprehensive preventive health screening of this standard costs between ₹4,500 and ₹5,000. However, under the Highway Hero+ Smart Clinic initiative, all services are being provided completely free of charge.
The clinic is equipped with modern diagnostic tools and offers:
- ECG (heart screening)
- Blood sugar and hemoglobin testing
- Blood pressure monitoring
- Oxygen saturation (SpO2) assessment
- Body Mass Index (BMI) evaluation
- Audiometry (hearing test)
- Pulmonary Function Test (lung capacity)
- Eye screening and colour blindness testing
- Body temperature monitoring
- Teleconsultation with senior doctors
- HIV & AIDS testing with consent
These screenings help identify silent health risks early, enabling timely treatment and ensuring drivers remain medically fit and road-safe.
Leaders Speak: A Shared Mission to Protect Highway Heroes
Kailash Bhati, Managing Director, M D Motors, said the initiative reflects a deep commitment to the transport fraternity.
“Truck drivers are the backbone of our economy, ensuring uninterrupted supply chains across India. We at M D Motors have always stood with the transport community. This Highway Hero+ Smart Clinic is our humble effort to safeguard their health, dignity, and well-being.”
Jograj Rathore, CEO, M D Motors, emphasized the initiative’s larger purpose beyond healthcare.
“This clinic is not just about treatment—it is about giving drivers a sense of dignity, security, and care. Our goal is to ensure every driver stays healthy, confident, and returns home safely to their families.”
Representative, All India Transporters Welfare Association (AITWA), highlighted the long-term vision.
“The Highway Hero+ Smart Clinic represents our commitment to providing accessible and preventive healthcare to drivers. Early detection can save lives, reduce accidents, and empower drivers to continue their essential role safely.”
Representative, BLR Logistics Ltd, underscored the role of corporate responsibility.
“Through our CSR support, we aim to strengthen healthcare access for drivers who keep India moving. This initiative reflects the corporate sector’s growing commitment to driver welfare and road safety.”
Ishwardan Gadhvi, HR & Admin, M D Motors, emphasized operational readiness and accessibility.
“We have ensured the clinic provides a welcoming and professional environment with modern equipment and facilities. Our objective is to make healthcare easily accessible, convenient, and completely free for every driver. We are planning to open more such clinics in all our eight centres over a period of time. Initially 50-100 drivers will be covered daily.”
Why This Initiative Matters: A National Need
India has over 9 million truck drivers, many of whom lack access to regular healthcare. Studies show that a large percentage of drivers suffer from undiagnosed diabetes, high blood pressure, vision problems, and sleep disorders—conditions that not only endanger their health but also increase the risk of highway accidents.
Preventive healthcare facilities like the Highway Hero+ Smart Clinic play a crucial role in:
- Reducing road accidents caused by medical emergencies
- Improving driver health, alertness, and productivity
- Supporting families dependent on driver incomes
- Strengthening India’s logistics backbone
A Model for Nationwide Replication
The initiative represents a powerful collaboration:
- AITWA: Leading healthcare management and driver outreach
- BLR Logistics Ltd: Providing CSR funding and support
- M D Motors ATS, Bakrol: Providing infrastructure and operational facilities
Transporters, fleet owners, and logistics companies are strongly encouraged to send drivers to the clinic regularly to benefit from preventive healthcare services.
This Ahmedabad-based Smart Clinic is expected to serve as a model for similar Highway Hero+ clinics across India.
