In a landmark move to strengthen India’s higher education ecosystem, the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Institute of Technology Agartala on February 26, 2026, paving the way for deeper academic integration, research collaboration and student mobility.
The three-year agreement outlines an ambitious framework that includes semester exchange programmes, summer research internships, faculty mobility and a structured BTech–MTech dual-degree pathway — a first-of-its-kind collaborative academic bridge between the two premier institutions.
Dual-Degree Model: One Academic Journey, Two Prestigious Degrees
A key highlight of the MoU is the introduction of a BTech–MTech dual-degree programme. Under this pathway, selected students from NIT Agartala can transition into a dual-degree track, earning a BTech from NITA and an MTech from IIT Gandhinagar.
As per the academic structure, students will typically complete three-and-a-half years at NIT Agartala and one-and-a-half years at IIT Gandhinagar, fulfilling the requirements for both degrees.
Additionally, selected BTech students from NITA will have the opportunity to spend a semester at IITGN under the Visiting Students Programme, with seamless credit transfer provisions.
Leadership Speaks
Speaking on the collaboration, Prof Rajat Moona, Director, IIT Gandhinagar, said, “This partnership reflects our commitment to building strong national academic networks. By enabling student mobility, joint research, and flexible academic pathways, we are creating opportunities for young scholars to benefit from the strengths of both institutions.”
He added, “Collaborations like these help break institutional silos and promote interdisciplinary learning and innovation. We believe this MoU will open new avenues for research excellence and academic growth for students and faculty alike.”
Prof S K Patra, Director, NIT Agartala, said, “The MoU opens new academic horizons for our students by providing access to advanced research facilities and flexible academic pathways. We are confident that this partnership will contribute meaningfully to academic excellence and innovation.”
A blueprint for national academic synergy
The collaboration reflects a broader vision of fostering institutional synergy across regions — connecting Gujarat and Tripura through knowledge exchange and research excellence.
The MoU will remain valid for three years and may be extended by mutual consent, setting the stage for sustained cooperation in emerging technologies, interdisciplinary studies and national capacity building.
