A fresh legal development involving actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay and his wife Sangeeta Sornalingam has triggered a heated debate across social media and political circles on International Women’s Day, just as Vijay’s party Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) prepares for its maiden electoral contest.

Sangeeta has moved the Chengalpattu District Court seeking protection of her right to continue residing in the couple’s matrimonial home at Neelankarai on Chennai’s East Coast Road, even as the divorce proceedings between the two remain pending.
The interlocutory petition accompanies her main original petition seeking dissolution of marriage under provisions of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, including Sections 27(1)(a), (b), and (d) along with claims relating to permanent alimony and other reliefs.
A Marriage of 26 Years in Court
In her affidavit dated February 22, Sangeeta said she had been a “dutiful wife” for 26 years, dedicating herself to raising their children — Jason Sanjay (25) and Divya Shasha (20) — and managing the household while Vijay pursued his acting career.
She stated in the petition that she had also made several efforts to reach an amicable separation through mutual consent.
The affidavit notes that she “took care of Vijay while he took good care of the family and provided a comfortable lifestyle” consistent with his public stature.
The interlocutory plea specifically seeks an interim order permitting her to continue residing in the Neelankarai residence or alternatively directing the respondent to provide equivalent accommodation “commensurate with his status”.
The petition states that Vijay’s counsel had allegedly conveyed that she “will not be permitted to reside in the matrimonial home if she chooses to approach the court for a legal separation.”
Sangeeta, a citizen of the United Kingdom, has argued that she currently has no alternative residence in India comparable to Vijay’s standard of living, and therefore fears being denied accommodation while the divorce case proceeds.
Social Media Debate Erupts
The legal battle gained traction online after remarks attributed to Sangeeta’s counsel surfaced on social media, sparking widespread discussion among political observers, fans and activists.
Some supporters of Vijay questioned the timing of the developments, noting that the controversy erupted just as TVK was preparing to mark Women’s Day with political outreach programmes across Tamil Nadu.
Political analysts said the episode could complicate Vijay’s attempt to project himself as a clean and reformist political entrant.
A senior political observer in Chennai told this correspondent: “Whenever a major public figure enters politics, personal controversies tend to acquire political overtones. Whether this is coincidental or strategic, the timing will inevitably become part of the political narrative.”
Vijay’s Camp Calls for Privacy
Sources close to Vijay indicated that the actor-politician intends to address the issue strictly through legal channels.
In a brief statement issued earlier in connection with the marital dispute, Vijay said: “This is a deeply personal matter, and I request everyone to respect the privacy of my family while the issue is being addressed legally.”
His legal counsel also urged restraint in public discussions.
A lawyer associated with Vijay’s legal team said: “The matter is currently sub judice. Any speculation or commentary outside the court process would be inappropriate and could prejudice the proceedings.”
Women’s Groups Urge Sensitivity
The controversy coinciding with International Women’s Day has prompted reactions from women’s rights groups and public figures.
A Chennai-based women’s rights activist said: “Regardless of who the individuals involved are, the focus must remain on ensuring dignity, fairness and legal protection for women. Personal disputes should not become tools for political mudslinging.”
A veteran Tamil film actress also commented cautiously: “Both Vijay and Sangeeta have their own lives and families. Social media should avoid turning personal issues into a public spectacle.”
Political Stakes
The dispute has drawn particular attention because Vijay’s Neelankarai residence carries symbolic political significance, having emerged as a key hub for meetings and strategy discussions after the launch of Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam earlier this year.
With the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approaching, political watchers say any controversy involving Vijay could influence public perception of the actor-turned-politician.
For now, the matter remains before the Chengalpattu District Court, where Sangeeta’s plea for interim residential rights will be examined while the main divorce petition proceeds.
