Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday called for stronger public–private partnerships in sports to accelerate India’s emergence as a global sporting power and provide fresh momentum to the country’s sports economy.

Addressing the gathering during the Final of the Aditya Birla Memorial Polo Cup in New Delhi, Singh said the government is creating an enabling ecosystem where young athletes have access to opportunities, resources and recognition.

“The Government, through a series of initiatives, is fostering a sports culture in which athletes and youth have access to opportunities, resources and respect,” he said.

Polo: India’s Heritage Sport

Highlighting the historical significance of polo, Singh said the sport has deep roots in India’s sporting tradition spanning thousands of years, and deserves recognition as a ‘Heritage Sport’ of the country.

He credited the Indian Army and the Indian Polo Association for preserving and promoting the sport’s legacy.

“Working in collaboration with the Indian Polo Association, the Indian Army has played a pivotal role in keeping this legacy vibrant and relevant,” he said.

The Defence Minister expressed confidence that joint efforts by the government, private sector and civil society would help nurture young sporting talent and bring greater glory to India on the international stage.

Sports Policies Creating New Opportunities

Singh highlighted key government initiatives such as the Khelo India and the Target Olympic Podium Scheme, which he said have transformed India’s sports ecosystem by creating pathways for athletes to compete globally.

He also pointed to upcoming policy reforms like the National Sports Governance Act and the Khelo Bharat Policy, which aim to bring greater transparency, professionalism and accountability to sports administration.

“These initiatives have provided our youth with a new platform to excel and move forward,” Singh said.

Private Sector Role in Sports Growth

Defence Minister emphasised that private sector participation could bring a professional approach, long-term vision and sustainable financial support to the sports ecosystem.

According to him, partnerships between government bodies, sports federations and industry stakeholders would help athletes gain access to advanced training, world-class infrastructure and international exposure.

“Just as private participation has energised sectors like industry, technology and education, it can inject similar momentum into sports,” he said.

Polo: Strategy, Skill and Spirit

Calling polo a sport that blends strategy, rhythm, coordination, discipline and courage, Singh said its revival and promotion could play a vital role in strengthening India’s sporting identity.

“Polo is not merely a sport of strength and speed. It is a unique blend of strategy, coordination, discipline and courage,” he remarked.

He expressed confidence that with collective efforts, India could soon build a stronger global identity in polo and other traditional sports.
