  • Landmark $3-billion long-term agreement to supply green ammonia over 15 years
  • Strategic partnership positions India as a major exporter of next-generation green fuels
  • Reliance’s integrated new-energy ecosystem anchors indigenous manufacturing and gigafactory scale-up
  • Deal aligned with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and global energy transition

MUMBAI, MAR 16

In a significant milestone for the global clean-energy transition, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has signed a binding long-term Supply and Purchase Agreement (SPA) with Samsung C&T Corporation, South Korea, for the supply of green ammonia over a 15-year period beginning in the second half of FY2029.

Valued at over $3 billion, the agreement ranks among the largest long-term green ammonia offtake contracts globally, underscoring India’s emergence as a key exporter of sustainable fuels produced through a fully integrated domestic value chain.

The pact aligns closely with India’s ambitious National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to transform the country into a global hub for green hydrogen and its derivatives.

A new global benchmark in clean energy trade

The agreement is expected to establish a new benchmark in the rapidly evolving green fuels market, where ammonia derived from renewable hydrogen is gaining traction as a carbon-free energy carrier for industries and power generation.

By supplying green ammonia produced in India to international markets, RIL is positioning the country at the forefront of the emerging global green-energy supply chain.

The partnership with Samsung C&T is also the first in a series of long-term offtake arrangements planned to support the scale-up of Reliance’s ambitious new-energy platform.

Reliance’s integrated green energy ecosystem

Reliance is building a fully integrated New Energy ecosystem that spans renewable power generation, energy storage, green hydrogen production and downstream green fuels and chemicals.

A core pillar of this strategy is the indigenisation of critical clean-energy technologies, including:

  • Solar photovoltaic modules
  • Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
  • Electrolyser systems used in green hydrogen production

By manufacturing these technologies domestically, the company aims to strengthen India’s industrial self-reliance and leadership in clean-energy manufacturing.

This ecosystem is expected to be supported by large-scale gigafactories, enabling India to deliver scalable, cost-competitive and reliable green energy solutions to global markets.

Anant Ambani on India’s green energy vision

Highlighting the strategic importance of the partnership, Anant Ambani, Executive Director of Reliance Industries Limited, said:

“We are proud to partner with Samsung C&T to supply green ammonia that is cost-competitive and reliable. This partnership marks an important step in India’s clean-energy journey.”

He emphasised that the company’s broader vision extends beyond energy transition.

“Reliance’s New Energy initiative aims not only to accelerate the global energy transition but also to build a strong industrial platform for India. By integrating the country’s renewable resources with manufacturing strength, world-class talent and innovation, we seek to produce value-added green fuels and chemicals at scale.”

Ambani also highlighted the importance of domestic technology development.

“At the heart of this vision is our commitment to indigenising the critical technologies of the energy transition — solar modules, battery energy storage systems and electrolysers — under a strong Make-in-India framework.”

He added that strategic collaborations would help scale the company’s clean-energy ecosystem.

“Partnerships such as this will accelerate the expansion of our green hydrogen ecosystem and gigafactories while contributing to India’s ambition of becoming a global hub for green hydrogen and its derivatives.”

India’s emerging role in the global green fuel economy

The Reliance–Samsung agreement reflects a growing international demand for green fuels as industries and countries seek to decarbonise their energy systems.

With abundant renewable resources, expanding manufacturing capacity and supportive policy frameworks like the National Green Hydrogen Mission, India is increasingly positioned to become one of the world’s leading suppliers of green hydrogen-based fuels.

For Reliance, the deal marks a defining step toward building one of the world’s most comprehensive clean-energy ecosystems, linking renewable power, hydrogen production and green fuel exports.
