In a landmark achievement redefining women’s healthcare, Gleneagles Hospitals Chennai—part of Fortis Healthcare—has successfully completed 500 robotic-assisted gynaecological surgeries in just 28 months, placing it among the fastest such milestones in India.

This accomplishment underscores the rapid rise of minimally invasive, technology-driven care, positioning robotic gynaecology as a transformative force in modern medicine.
- Gleneagles Chennai clocks record 500 robotic gynaecological surgeries in just 28 months
- From complex fibroids to cancer care—precision technology transforms outcomes
- A 5-kg fibroid removal sets a global benchmark in robotic excellence
- Faster recovery, minimal pain: patients embrace next-gen surgical care
- Robotic gynaecology emerges as a game-changer in India’s healthcare landscape
Precision Meets Complexity: A New Era in Surgery
The milestone has been led by Dr Padmapriya Vivek, Director, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Robotic Surgeon, Gleneagles Hospitals Chennai, whose expertise spans complex procedures including hysterectomies, myomectomies, advanced endometriosis surgeries, oncology interventions, and treatment of fibroids, adenomyosis, ovarian cysts, and pelvic organ prolapse.
She said: “Completing 500 robotic procedures in a relatively short period has provided valuable clinical experience across a wide range of gynaecological conditions. Robotic technology allows us to perform complex procedures with greater precision, better visualisation and improved patient outcomes.”
Adding a global dimension to the programme, she revealed:
“Around 10 per cent of these 500 robotic gynaecological surgeries have been performed on patients from overseas.”
Highlighting the hospital’s role in capacity building, she noted:
“As part of democratising knowledge on robotic surgeries, we have trained over 100 doctors.”
World-Class Feat: Pushing Surgical Boundaries
A standout highlight is a world record-recognised hysterectomy involving a 5-kg fibroid, demonstrating the extraordinary precision and safety of robotic platforms in handling highly complex cases.
Patients across 25 to 70 years have benefited—ranging from fertility-preserving treatments to advanced cancer surgeries.
Technology That Transforms Recovery
Robotic-assisted procedures are redefining patient outcomes with:
- Minimal blood loss
- Smaller incisions
- Reduced post-operative pain
- Shorter hospital stays
- Faster return to daily life
Addressing the media conference Ms S Niranjani, Chief Operating Officer and Hospital Head, said: “Robotic surgery has become an important advancement in the treatment of gynaecological conditions, enabling surgeons to operate with enhanced precision through three-dimensional visualisation and improved control of surgical instruments. This is particularly relevant in complex pelvic surgeries where preservation of surrounding tissues and faster recovery are critical.”
Fortis Vision: Scaling Innovation with Impact
In a statement Mr Anil Vinayak, Group Chief Operating Officer, Fortis Healthcare, said: “This milestone underscores Fortis Healthcare’s commitment to advancing surgical excellence through the adoption of cutting-edge technologies. The success of the robotic gynaecology program at Gleneagles Hospital Chennai reflects our focus on delivering high-quality, patient-centric care and expanding access to minimally invasive surgery across our network. Such achievements reaffirm our vision to drive clinical innovation that enhances outcomes and improves quality of life for patients.”
Patients Speak: Healing Beyond Surgery
A patient shared:
“I underwent robotic surgery for a complex gynaecological condition and experienced significantly lower post-operative pain and minimal blood loss. I was discharged earlier than expected and able to resume normal activities within a short period, which made a meaningful difference to my recovery.”
Another patient added:
“The procedure involved precise removal of the affected tissue while preserving surrounding structures. The smaller incisions and reduced surgical trauma resulted in a smooth post-operative course, with no major complications and a faster return to daily function.”
Human Touch Meets High-Tech Care
In a heartwarming close to the milestone event, Dr Padmapriya also connected personally with beneficiaries—capturing the moment with a selfie alongside patients, symbolising the blend of advanced technology and compassionate care.
