In a significant step towards advancing orthopaedic education and clinical excellence, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) successfully conducted a two-day “Basic Ilizarov Workshop”, reinforcing its stature as a leading centre for specialised orthopaedic training in South India.
The workshop was organised by the Department of Orthopaedics under the leadership of Dr. Suresh Gandhi B, Professor & Head of the Department and Organising Chairman, along with Dr. Pasupathy P, Organising Secretary.

The programme saw enthusiastic participation from nearly 50 young orthopaedic surgeons and postgraduate trainees from across South India.
Designed as a comprehensive learning platform, the workshop featured:

The seamless execution highlighted the dedicated efforts of faculty, organisers, and departmental staff.
Eminent Faculty Lead the Learning Curve
A distinguished panel of 10 eminent orthopaedic experts from across India enriched the academic sessions.
Notably, Dr. Mangal Parihar and Dr. Vasudevan P. N. served as lead faculty, bringing extensive clinical expertise and practical insights into the programme.
Understanding the Ilizarov Technique
The workshop focused on the globally recognised Ilizarov technique, pioneered by Gavriil Ilizarov.
This specialised orthopaedic method is used for:
- Bone reconstruction and lengthening
- Correction of deformities
- Treatment of complex fractures and non-union cases
It involves a circular external fixator system that applies controlled tension, stimulating new bone formation through distraction osteogenesis.

By equipping young surgeons with advanced skills in limb reconstruction and deformity correction, the initiative is expected to:
