CHENNAI, APR 8
Vodafone Idea Limited (Vi), one of India’s leading telecom operators, on Wednesday (April 8, 2026) launched its 5G services in Chennai — completing its footprint across all five major Indian metros. The milestone places Chennai alongside Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, and Kolkata as a fully 5G-enabled Vi city, and sets the stage for a rapid rollout across Tamil Nadu’s industrial and cultural centres.
- The Arrival: Vi officially launches 5G in Chennai, completing its presence across all five major Indian metros — Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and now Chennai
- The Expansion Wave: By May 2026, Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli, Salem, Tiruppur, Vellore, and Puducherry will join the Vi 5G network — six more cities, one strategic leap
- The Infrastructure Behind It: Nokia-powered, AI-driven Self-Optimising Networks (SON) form the backbone — a grid that learns, adapts, and improves itself in real-time
- The Tamil Nadu Play: From textile hubs to temple cities, from medical centres to a French colonial town by the sea — Vi’s rollout map reads like a who’s who of Tamil Nadu’s economic geography
- Beyond Connectivity: Vi also announces a three-season partnership as Chennai Super Kings’ Official Communications Partner — complete with a Fan Fest engagement contest for cricket-mad Tamil Nadu
Chennai’s addition brings Vi’s total 5G-active city count to over 50. Earlier this month, the company announced plans to extend its network to 90 more cities across India. As part of that nationwide push, Vi has committed to launching 5G services in Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), Salem, Tiruppur, Vellore, and the Union Territory of Puducherry — all before the end of May 2026.
A Network Built for Tamil Nadu’s DNA
The six cities earmarked for the next phase are not arbitrary. Coimbatore, Salem, and Tiruppur are the state’s manufacturing and textile backbone. Vellore is a nationally significant hub for healthcare and higher education. Trichy anchors commerce and academia in central Tamil Nadu. And Puducherry — the “French Riviera of the East” — represents a unique blend of tourism, governance, and emerging enterprise.
Vi’s broader ambition encompasses 133 cities across 17 priority circles, with Tamil Nadu identified as a key growth market given its data-hungry demographics and strong industrial base.
The network itself is built for performance. Vi has partnered with Nokia to deploy energy-efficient infrastructure underpinned by AI-powered Self-Optimising Networks (SON) — a technology that automatically monitors and improves network performance without human intervention, ensuring consistent speeds even as traffic scales.
In His Own Words
“We are accelerating the expansion of Vi’s 5G network across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, continuously strengthening our presence in the state’s key markets. The launch of Vi 5G in Chennai — alongside our already-operational 5G in Madurai and the upcoming rollouts in Coimbatore, Trichy, Salem, Tiruppur, and Vellore — marks important milestones on this journey. Our investments in strengthening the network, coupled with the growing uptake of unlimited data plans like ‘Vi Non-Stop Hero’, have been instrumental in driving tremendous growth in data consumption. We remain committed to delivering the best network experience by bringing next-generation connectivity to millions of customers across our circle,” said Sai Venkataraman, Circle Business Head – Tamil Nadu, Vi
The CSK Play: 5G Meets Cricket
In a move that signals Vi’s deeper commitment to Tamil Nadu as a market — and not merely a geography — the company has also announced a three-season deal as the Official Communications Partner of Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
The partnership goes beyond branding. Through the CSK Academy, Vi will support grassroots talent identification and development. For fans, the company is launching Vi Fan Fest — a multi-channel cricket engagement contest running across social media, the Vi app, and select Vi stores. Participants stand to win match tickets, exclusive merchandise, player meet-and-greet opportunities, and on-ground fan experiences.
