CHENNAI, APR 9

In a sharp escalation of the delimitation debate, M. K. Stalin on Wednesday asserted that southern states would not accept any decision imposed without their consent, warning the Centre against destabilising the region’s political balance.

Addressing the issue in a strongly worded message, Stalin cautioned Narendra Modi against provoking unrest, stating that the Prime Minister should not turn a “calm south into a storm.”

‘Answer the South’s Questions’

In a post on X titled “Delimitation Danger: Is India sliding into dictatorship?”, the DMK president demanded clarity from the Union government.

“The Prime Minister must answer these fair and pressing questions raised by the people of the South,” Stalin said.

He questioned why the delimitation exercise was being conducted without transparency:

“Why is the Union BJP government shrouding the entire delimitation process in secrecy instead of coming clean on how it intends to carry it out?”

Vajpayee Precedent Invoked

Referring to past decisions, Stalin cited former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who had deferred delimitation in 2001.

“In 2001, former Prime Minister Vajpayee deferred delimitation for 25 years in the national interest. What is Prime Minister Modi’s answer to the just and reasonable demand of southern states to follow the same path today?” he asked.

The Chief Minister also raised concerns over the Centre’s decision to convene a special session of Parliament amid ongoing state elections.

“What is it that you are trying to hide? Forcing through far-reaching constitutional amendments without even convening an all-party consultation is nothing short of dictatorship,” Stalin claimed.

He further questioned why requests from Opposition leaders to delay the session until after April 29 were ignored.

‘Consent Is Non-Negotiable’

Taking a firm stand, Stalin underscored that Tamil Nadu would resist any move perceived as diluting the rights of southern states.

“The DMK will not stand by and watch any attempt that places the rights of southern states at stake while handing greater power to the North.”

“This is the future of the people who live here. Any decision taken without our consent, without even engaging with us, will not be accepted, come what may,” he said.

He also pointed out that questions raised by Opposition parties and the media remain unanswered, asking whether the Prime Minister would respond to the concerns of the people.
