Sunil Bajpai has assumed charge as the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax for Tamil Nadu & Puducherry following his promotion on April 10, 2026.

A 1990-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, Bajpai brings a formidable academic and professional profile to the post. He holds a B.Tech in Civil Engineering from IIT Kanpur and an M.Tech in Structural Engineering from IIT Delhi. He has further strengthened his credentials with a PGDM from IIM Lucknow and a Bachelor of Law (LL.B.) degree.
During his distinguished career, Bajpai has served in multiple strategic roles within the Income Tax Department, including as Additional Director of Income Tax in the Directorate of Systems and as Principal Additional Director General at the NADT Regional Campus, Lucknow.
On deputation, he held key positions such as Joint Assessor & Collector at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and Director at the National Security Council Secretariat, reflecting his diverse administrative and policy experience.
Prior to this elevation, he was serving as Chief Commissioner of Income Tax-5, Mumbai. With his promotion, Bajpai now takes charge as the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax for Tamil Nadu & Puducherry, a role critical to strengthening tax administration and compliance in the region.
