In a significant leadership transition in India’s nuclear energy sector, P. A. Suresh Babu has assumed charge as Chairman and Managing Director of Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Limited (BHAVINI) at Kalpakkam.
A Distinguished Scientist of the Department of Atomic Energy and former Director (HR) at Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited, Suresh Babu takes over at a crucial time when BHAVINI is spearheading India’s fast breeder reactor programme. The organisation is responsible for the construction, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of the 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam, along with future advanced reactors.

With an illustrious career spanning 37 years in the nuclear industry, Suresh Babu brings extensive experience across Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR), Pressurised Water Reactors (PWR), and corporate human resource functions.
After graduating in Mechanical Engineering from Government Engineering College, Thrissur in 1988, he underwent nuclear training at the BARC Training School in 1989. He began his career at Madras Atomic Power Station, where he served for 14 years in various capacities. He later played key roles at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project, including serving as Station Director.
In February 2022, he was appointed Director (HR) at NPCIL by the Government of India, a position he held until taking charge at BHAVINI.
Suresh Babu has also served as a Board Member of NPCIL, Chairman of Anushakti Vidyut Nigam Ltd. (a joint venture between NPCIL and NTPC), and Board Member of Uranium Corporation of India Limited, reflecting his wide-ranging leadership across India’s nuclear ecosystem.
His tenure as CMD of BHAVINI will be for three years, during which he is expected to drive operational excellence and strategic expansion in India’s fast breeder reactor programme.
