Earn while you learn: PM Internship Scheme opens doors for final-year students

NE EDUCATION & EMP BUREAU
NEW DELHI, APR 22

In a major push to make India’s youth job-ready from day one, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs has expanded the eligibility criteria of the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS), allowing final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students to apply for paid internships in leading companies across the country.

MCA expands eligibility criteria of the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) to include final-year graduate and post graduate students

🔹Final year students between 18-25 years of age can now apply to paid internships in top companies through the PMIS portal

🔹Modifications…

The move opens up early access to structured industry exposure, enabling students aged 18–25 to gain hands-on experience even before completing their degrees—bridging the long-standing gap between classroom learning and workplace expectations.

  •  Ministry of Corporate Affairs expands PMIS eligibility to final-year UG & PG students
  • Youth aged 18–25 can now access paid internships in top companies before graduation
  • Reform aligns with National Education Policy 2020 focus on skills, employability and experiential learning
  • NOC from institutions mandatory to ensure academic continuity alongside internships

Officials said the reform is aimed at embedding real-world learning into the academic journey. “Modifications in PMIS advance India’s National Education Policy’s (NEP) goal of enhancing student employability and skill development, ensuring smoother transitions from education to work,” the statement noted.

Under the revised guidelines:

  • Final-year UG and PG students are now eligible
  • Applicants must meet existing scheme criteria
  • A No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the institution is mandatory
  • The NOC must confirm that internships will not disrupt academic commitments
  • It must be signed by authorised officials such as HoDs, Deans, Principals or Training & Placement Officers

The initiative aligns closely with the vision of the National Education Policy 2020, which places strong emphasis on internships, industry engagement and experiential learning as core pillars of higher education.

By enabling students to work in real corporate environments, PMIS is expected to sharpen critical skills such as problem-solving, communication, teamwork and adaptability—qualities essential in today’s fast-evolving job market.

Experts believe this early exposure can significantly boost employability at the time of graduation. It not only provides insight into business processes and professional culture but also helps students build confidence and clarity about career paths.

With this expansion, PMIS positions itself as a gateway for youth to transition seamlessly from education to employment—turning ambition into action, and classrooms into launchpads for careers.
