Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the transformative Ganga Expressway, a 594-km greenfield high-speed corridor connecting Meerut in western Uttar Pradesh to Prayagraj, marking a watershed moment in India’s infrastructure journey.

Completed in less than 3.5 years, the project stands among the country’s largest and fastest-executed expressway developments.

Bridging the East-West Divide

For decades, eastern Uttar Pradesh lagged behind despite its vast potential. The expressway is designed to change that narrative by integrating the region with the state’s more prosperous western belt.

It will reduce travel time from about 11 hours to nearly six hours, unlocking faster movement of people, goods, and services while opening up new economic opportunities.

Smart, Safe and Strategic Corridor

The expressway integrates cutting-edge AI-enabled camera systems to enhance road safety by providing real-time alerts and accident prevention mechanisms.

A key strategic feature is the 3.5-km Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) in Shahjahanpur district, enabling Indian Air Force aircraft operations and strengthening national security readiness.

Adani-Led Execution at Scale

Adani Enterprises Limited through its roads arm Adani Road Transport Limited (ARTL) delivered 464 km (nearly 80%) of the corridor, deploying over 12,000 workers at peak construction, while the remaining stretch was built by IRB Infrastructure.

Economic Multiplier for 8 Crore People

According to Uttar Pradesh government estimates:

  • ₹25,000–30,000 crore annual logistics savings
  • ~3 lakh jobs over the next decade
  • ₹1 lakh crore+ GDP contribution

The statement noted:

“The project will reduce travel time from about 11 hours to nearly six hours and open new economic opportunities across the state.”

The corridor will improve freight velocity, reduce inventory costs, and strengthen supply chains across sectors.

Boost for Farmers, Industry & Tourism

By enabling faster movement of agricultural produce, the expressway will help farmers and small businesses access markets more efficiently and achieve better price realisation.

It will also enhance connectivity to major spiritual and tourism destinations including Garhmukteshwar, Kalkidham, Belhadevi, Chandrika (Shakti Peeth) and the iconic Triveni Sangam, boosting the regional tourism economy.

Industrial Corridors & Future Growth Grid

The Uttar Pradesh government plans 11 industrial corridors across all 12 districts along the alignment—Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Pratapgarh and Prayagraj—laying the foundation for large-scale industrialisation and job creation.

Spanning 519 villages and benefiting over 8 crore people, the six-lane (expandable to eight lanes) expressway will serve as a backbone for sustained economic growth and regional balance.

KEY FEATURES SNAPSHOT

  • Length: 594 km (3564 lane km; expandable to 8 lanes)
  • Coverage: 12 districts, 519 villages, 8 crore people
  • Developers: Adani Enterprises (80%), IRB Infrastructure (20%)
  • Time Saving: ~5 hours (11 → 6 hours)
  • Fuel Saving: ~30%
  • Employment: ~3,00,000 opportunities (10-year horizon)
