CHENNAI, MAY 17

Tamil Nadu is set for an intense spell of pre-monsoon showers as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy rainfall alerts across multiple districts, warning of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds over the next several days.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has forecast widespread rain activity across the State due to active weather systems over the Bay of Bengal and advancing southwest monsoon conditions.

  • IMD issues heavy rain warning for several Tamil Nadu districts till May 21
  • Chennai likely to witness light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning
  • Delta districts including Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai under rain watch
  • Western and ghat districts may receive heavy showers with gusty winds up to 50 kmph
  • Rainfall activity expected to bring major relief from scorching summer temperatures

Heavy Rain Warning for Key Districts

According to the latest IMD bulletin, heavy rain is likely over the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul and Madurai districts on May 17, while an expanded rain belt is expected on May 18 covering Tiruchirappalli, Salem, Karur, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Sivaganga and Pudukkottai districts as well.

Meteorologists have also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph in isolated places across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Chennai Gets Pleasant Weather Relief

After weeks of oppressive summer heat, Chennai and its suburbs are witnessing unusually pleasant weather conditions due to intermittent rainfall and cloud cover.

The IMD has predicted light to moderate rain with thunderstorms in Chennai over the weekend, with daytime temperatures expected to remain around 36–37°C — several degrees below seasonal averages.

Parts of Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Tiruvannamalai and Villupuram are also expected to receive isolated rain spells.

Delta Districts Under Watch

The agriculturally crucial Cauvery Delta districts are also likely to receive significant rainfall activity over the next few days.

Districts including Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore have been placed under isolated heavy rainfall watch by the IMD.

Weather officials say the rain could provide temporary relief for farmers and improve moisture conditions ahead of the next cultivation cycle.

Trichy, Southern Tamil Nadu Already Lashed

Several southern districts have already experienced intense showers during the past few days.

Trichy witnessed heavy thundershowers that led to brief inundation in low-lying areas and temporary power disruptions, while districts such as Tirunelveli and Ramanathapuram recorded substantial rainfall earlier this week.

Authorities in some southern districts have advised residents to avoid rivers, ponds and water bodies during heavy rain periods as a precautionary measure.

Monsoon Momentum Building

Weather experts believe the current spell signals strengthening pre-monsoon activity and gradual southwest monsoon advancement over southern India.

IMD data shows Tamil Nadu’s pre-monsoon rainfall this year is currently near normal, with the State recording about 96.5 mm rainfall between March 1 and May 16.

Climate researchers have also observed increasing rainfall variability over Tamil Nadu in recent years due to rising moisture levels and changing monsoon behaviour patterns.

Public Advisory

The IMD has urged residents to:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during thunderstorms
  • Stay indoors during lightning activity
  • Exercise caution in low-lying and flood-prone areas
  • Monitor official weather updates regularly

With rain clouds continuing to build over the Bay of Bengal and southern peninsula, Tamil Nadu is likely to witness an active and wetter-than-usual weather phase in the coming days.
