NEW DELHI, MAY 25

In a major boost to cancer care for India’s armed forces community, Army Hospital (Research and Referral) has commissioned a state-of-the-art Ring Gantry-based Linear Accelerator, ushering in a new era of precision-driven radiotherapy treatment for serving soldiers, veterans and their families.

The advanced cancer treatment technology was formally inaugurated in the presence of Rajesh Kumar Singh on Sunday, marking a significant milestone in the modernisation of oncology services within the Armed Forces Medical Services.

For hundreds of military families battling cancer every year, the development is expected to bring not just cutting-edge treatment closer home, but also renewed hope, improved survival outcomes and enhanced quality of care.

  • Army Hospital (R&R) commissions advanced Ring Gantry-based Linear Accelerator for cancer treatment
  • New radiotherapy technology enables highly precise tumour targeting with reduced damage to healthy tissues
  • Facility will benefit serving personnel, veterans and dependents with faster and advanced in-house cancer care
  • Modern radiotherapy techniques including IGRT, IMRT and Stereotactic Radiosurgery now available at the hospital
  • AFMS begins phased modernisation of oncology centres across the country

A New Lifeline for Cancer Patients in Uniform

Cancer treatment often demands precision, speed and access to advanced technology — something that can make a life-changing difference for patients and families navigating emotionally difficult journeys.

The newly commissioned Linear Accelerator significantly upgrades the hospital’s treatment capabilities and replaces older radiotherapy equipment that has now been decommissioned.

The advanced system allows doctors to deliver highly targeted radiation directly to tumour sites while minimising exposure to surrounding healthy tissues, thereby reducing complications and improving patient comfort during treatment.

Medical experts say this precision-focused approach is particularly important in complex cancer cases where protecting nearby organs and tissues is critical.

Advanced Radiotherapy Techniques Now Available

The modern Linear Accelerator is equipped to deliver some of the world’s most advanced radiotherapy procedures, including:

  • Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT)
  • Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
  • Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)
  • Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT)
  • Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)

These sophisticated techniques are widely recognised for improving treatment accuracy, reducing side effects and shortening therapy duration for several cancer patients.

The technology is also expected to enhance the hospital’s in-house treatment capacity, helping manage the growing patient load at one of the country’s premier defence medical institutions.

Modernising Cancer Care Across Armed Forces Hospitals

Officials described the commissioning as a crucial step towards strengthening oncology services within the Armed Forces Medical Services ecosystem.

Sources said similar upgrades are being planned for other AFMS oncology centres in a phased manner as part of a broader effort to modernise military healthcare infrastructure across India.

The event was attended by senior defence and medical officials, including Arti Sarin and Avinash Das.

For military families who often endure long and emotionally taxing medical journeys, the new facility stands as a powerful reminder that advanced healthcare and compassionate treatment are becoming increasingly accessible within the armed forces healthcare network.
