The closed-door emergency meeting, was attended by top bureaucrats, senior police officials and Home Department authorities, focused extensively on strengthening public safety, expediting criminal investigations and ensuring stringent punishment for offenders involved in heinous crimes.
The review comes in the backdrop of widespread outrage over the brutal sexual assault and murder of a 10-year-old girl in Coimbatore’s Sulur area, an incident that triggered sharp reactions across Tamil Nadu and intensified calls for stronger policing and faster justice delivery.

Vijay Cracks the Whip on Heinous Crimes
During the meeting, the Chief Minister reportedly instructed the police department to register cases involving sexual offences without delay and ensure swift investigation and prosecution to create a strong deterrent against future crimes.
Officials said Vijay emphasised that offenders involved in crimes against women and children must face the “harshest possible punishment” under the law, while also stressing the need for continuous monitoring of sensitive cases across districts. Sources indicated that discussions also covered measures to strengthen women’s safety infrastructure, enhance intelligence gathering and intensify crackdowns on drug-related offences and anti-social activities.

The meeting witnessed the presence of senior officials including Chief Secretary M. Saikumar, Additional Chief Secretary (Home, Prohibition and Excise) K. Manivasan and Director General of Police Sandeep Rai Rathore, along with senior administrative and police officers.
Officials conducted a comprehensive assessment of the prevailing law and order situation across the state, including crime trends, policing response mechanisms and district-level security preparedness.

Government Signals Tough Governance Approach
Political observers view the emergency review meeting as a strong signal from the newly formed Vijay government that issues relating to public safety and law enforcement will receive top priority in the administration’s governance agenda.
Since assuming office earlier this month, Vijay has repeatedly emphasised women’s safety, anti-drug enforcement and administrative transparency as key pillars of his government.
The Chief Minister had earlier announced plans to establish dedicated anti-drug units and strengthen mechanisms aimed at improving public safety across Tamil Nadu.
Public Anger Mounts After Coimbatore Incident
The recent Coimbatore tragedy has triggered emotional reactions across political and social circles, with citizens demanding stronger preventive policing and quicker judicial action in crimes involving minors.
Sources said the government is closely monitoring the investigation and may announce additional safety measures in the coming days as part of a broader law and order strengthening exercise.
Officials maintained that continuous high-level reviews would be conducted to ensure rapid response and effective enforcement throughout the state.
