AHMEDABAD, JUNE 3

In a major infrastructure upgrade aimed at supporting future air traffic growth, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) has operationalised a state-of-the-art Aviation Fuel Station (AFS), significantly enhancing fuel storage, aircraft refuelling efficiency and operational reliability.

The commissioning of the new facility marks a strategic milestone for Ahmedabad Airport, which continues to rank among India’s fastest-growing aviation hubs.

The development further strengthens Ahmedabad Open Access, recognised as the country’s largest standalone refueller-based Into-Plane operation. Airport officials said the new fuel farm will substantially improve refuelling reliability while creating opportunities for additional oil marketing companies to participate in jet fuel supply operations at the airport.

Designed to meet the demands of increasing flight movements, the facility has been built with a strong focus on safety, efficiency, sustainability and operational continuity.

Spread across nearly 27,000 square metres, the fuel farm boasts a storage capacity of 8,000 kilolitres through four dedicated storage tanks. Supporting the infrastructure is a fleet of 17 refuellers that enable faster and more seamless aircraft turnaround operations. Plans are also underway to induct two additional high-capacity refuellers to further strengthen the airport’s fuelling capabilities.

A key feature of the new facility is its advanced fuel filtration and quality-control systems, which ensure the delivery of clean and safe aviation fuel conforming to international standards. Automated and RFID-enabled monitoring systems provide real-time tracking, enhanced accuracy and greater operational transparency.

The Aviation Fuel Station is also equipped with robust fire safety and emergency response systems designed in line with global aviation safety benchmarks, reinforcing preparedness and risk mitigation capabilities.

Industry observers note that enhanced fuel infrastructure is critical for airports seeking to expand airline operations and improve service efficiency. The new facility is expected to support growing passenger and cargo traffic while enabling smoother airline operations and faster aircraft turnaround times.

With the operationalisation of the 8,000-KL fuel farm, Ahmedabad Airport has added another key pillar to its future-ready aviation ecosystem, reinforcing its position as a major gateway for domestic and international connectivity in western India.
